First saw I cut with....032av. Used it a few times in high school. Still in use today. That saw has cut a lot of wood over the years!!
First saw I owned. Homie xl-12, was a great cutting saw when it would run. Lol. Saw that got me hooked on saws...Husky 2100!!

First saw I ever was privileged with to use was a McCulloch Timber Bear, it was also my first rebuild that aye we'll say it ended up getting stripped and parts sold o_O lol followed by Dads old Poulan 25DA which I still have and occasionally use today. First saw I bought new was an MS251, terrific saw for a novice teen but it didn't take long for the "BIGGER" bug to hit then came the first 461... but we'll leave that bug where it is :aplastao:.

Great thread. My dad worked at a power equipment/cycle shop for 40 years and sold and serviced Stihl as soon as they took on the line back in the 70’s (the business owner made millions on Homelite saws and Mercury outboards). Needless to say grew up on Stihl. Dad had an 031 and then later one of the first 026’s and an 038 Super.

When I started burning wood Dad said he’d get me set up with my first saw and gave me a Jonsereds 52e someone traded in, “to get me by until I could buy a Stihl”. Disappointed at first in running an “off brand” saw, by the end of the first day running it I called him to tell him it ran circles around his 026 and how impressed I was with it. Peeved him to say the least and I enjoy our back and forth ribbing to this day. I largely stayed with Jonsered and he still runs his faithful 026.

How much of the electrical system worked/was there?

Was all there, but never used it. Was stolen out of the back of my pickup truck in 1994 or so. :(
Cut a lot of wood with that saw, rebuilt the carbeltater and new points and condenser in the early eighty's when we still had a McCulloch dealer to get parts from. I discussed fixing the electric start with a McCulloch tech at the time and it was decided to leave it be, I can't remember the reason he gave though, I believe it just needed new batteries.

Dad had a Homelite Super XL Automatic, not sure what happened to it. I only used it once then he got rid of it and bought a new Poulan Pro PP4218 AV Classic from Sams for $99.00 with a case. I asked him why years later and he said because it had a chain brake and the Homelite didn't. Then he bought an early Stihl 045 AV in a yard sale for $20.00 and guess what, no brake on it either.

First saw I ever personally owned was an 026 Pro, still have it.

Everytime i see one incomplete it was missing the battery box. Everyone just threw them away and put on a normal brace from a non E saw. That was the hardest part to source when i redid my 3-10E.

It still had it, was a crack in it and could see the batteries inside. Little charging jack was still there too.

First saw I cut with was my neighbors dads blue XL12. We built a red cedar tree fort with. We must have been like eight or nine. Thing felt like a ton to us.
Next was dads Craftsmen electric that following fall because he found out we could cut so he bought that and installed a cabin wood stove in our house. When the dads went bow hunting they would come back in the afternoon to drop off a trailer with small logs for us to cut with the electric saw and some used ATF from the auto shop. Ran some friends saws bucking that winter. Next spring a new Skill saw in yellow and black showed up for thinning our three acre woods and removing all the snags. That little 16xx Skill was a screamer but never kept it's tune. Looking back I'd bet it had an air leak. One day in a fat oak log it went boom and I mean boom....rod out the bottom. Scary *s-word when your a kid. The saw was toast. He never stopped *b-wording about that "new saw" I blew up.
After that it was Pioneers, Huskys and big bows on red Craftsmans for firewood "pocket money" we called it. I found the wood and Ricky had the saws and a pickup truck. I climbed without gaffs....didn't have any at the time. Rigging, tuning and cleaning was my deal. Ricky did the bulk of bucking with that Craftsmen bow and a 655 handled tree killing duties. We always had a third guy to help load, hand split where it lays and move brush. Rarely got paid to cut yard trees but did a few here and there. Always a win win if they pay to take the dead ones away.
Hell, I still do that.

1st saw i ran was a early 70s top handle Mac.
Bought a farm and was gifted a Homelite 330.
After 2 tips to the dealer for carb boots/intake i fixed the AV with rubber donuts off car shock absorbers.
Intake boot lasted till i bought an 036 Stihl. It was stolen 3 months later.
I needed a saw for firewood heat in the old 1865 farm house so i bought an 039, dealer didn't have an 036 in house.
I still have the 039.
They invented the internet and i found some carb info and later this site.
Now i have more saws than fingers and toes.
