When you saw your loved one die and smoking was one of the reasons, you don’t want to take cigarettes in your hands anymore

I smoked 48 years, first packs were a quarter. I quit in 2001 as a retirement gift to my self and a pack was just $2.00 bought thru a fellow worker who made a weekly trip to Indaina to avoid the tax in Michigan.

Any way I quit a little at a time, first no smokeing in the house, no mater how hot or cold if I wanted to smoke I got dressed and went out side. then No smokeing in my truck and of course never in the wifes ride as she didn't smoke.

By the time I walked out of the shop April 1st 2001 I had totaly quit. OH i had the urge a lot so I found projects to do to keep my mind busy and not thing of smoking.

Today I can't stand the smell of others smokeing near by. I have even moved our car at a car show because some one next to us smokes.

Thats my story, best I know of was a fellow worker.

Wanted to stop smoking so every week instead of buying a carton of smokes he would go to a gun shop near by and find a gun he wanted and lay it away. The gun shop had a one year lay away program so evey week he went with his cigarette money and paid on that gun till finished at the end of a year.
I was at his house once and he had guns all over the place. Behind doors in corners and proped againest some of the furtinure even.

After 15 years of not smokeing he started selling some of the guns off but kept buying also as he just liked guns
By the time he retired he had decided would only collect Winchesters and Remingtons, told me he had in the neighbour hood of 468 yet but planed on selling all but the rarest ones at gun shows since he was trired.
I ran into him about a year ago and he said he had 24 guns left and was going to keep those.

I never smoked, but my uncle did similar to your friend. He put the $30 or whatever it was that he would have spent on a carton of smokes into a drawer, and then saved it up. A couple years later, he helped his son restore a 69 camaro with the money out of that drawer, and converted a barn fresh plain jane into a SS/Z-28 replica that won the local car show.

It's amazing how much it adds up...

Quit smoking October 2018 and it sucks still think about it but don’t do it. Quit drinking for awhile but now I drink and don’t smoke or vape. Didn’t want to substitute one for another. Getting to the point I can’t stand to be around one that smokes and hate to be a hypocrite but hate the smell unless just lite smells so good ? lol

Smoked unfiltered Lucky Strikes for over 20 years. Vaped for 5 years. Now I am off both. No matter what I tried, I couldn't kick the cigs. The vaping made it possible.

Started smoking when i was 13 and picked up dip along the way. Smoke outside, dip inside or when i needed my hands free. Turned 40 last year and decided I would never do tobacco again as I dont want my daughter to want to do it and I want to live into my 90's for her. I replaced it all with nicotine gum and so far it works just fine. I do about 5 pieces a day. As a bonus, I can do it at work because nicotine gum is a medicine recommended by my doctor.

To be honest, food is a far worse vice for me. I am about 80 pounds over weight and have family history of diabetes and heart disease. I may look into gastric bypass someday.

Mmm, original Lucky Strikes and Pall Malls are the best ciggies ever. Puffed on those in high school while everybody else was choking on their Marlboro lights.

I'd say my answer to your vice.is .. weaning is the way.... I’ve smoked from 14 onwards, gave up cigs for a while and then subbed for the herbal weed.. but remembered how I gave up. I weaned myself.
That is only smoke when absolutely gagging for it... but most importantly only a few puffs of the cig.. put it out...save the butt for next time. (they taste absolutely disgusting when lit up again..)
When next gagging for a cig, Re light last cig.. taste and tell yourself it’s disgusting. Most importantly only smoke enough to fix th craving... but still tell yourself it’s disgusting..” do not smoke past the disgusting part.”otherwise .your taste will become accustomed to it, and you will start to like it and need more...
Every time you really need a cig. Do the above.. but each time only smoke just a few puffs less is better if you can.!but keep tellin yourself it tastes disgusting.
It does taste absolutely horrible for the first few puffs... just don’t go pass this.. after a while you will light the butt and just put it out after the first puff.. make sure you say why am I doing this it’s horrible.

This worked for me.. ymmv...
there’s no time limit in giving up,,, look at it as a less amount each week and then less each month..
a lot of people slip back into smoking by being offered cigs from smokers. Each time offered just say thankyou, but I’m giving up.. if I want one I will ask..

It’s hard at first then becomes a bit easier, and every now and again you have to remind yourself how many days you have not had a few puffs. This does become longer each time if you keep reminding yourself..
For me it was 2 days, 1day 2days 3days 5days 2days 5 days... Etc. then a week... then I had to beat a week without a puff.. then 2weeks then more and more..yes I’d slip up, but only a few puffs and it was horrible each time..
(The most horrible are the relite cigs, they taste like an ashtray)

That work for me... but what works for you maybe different. The key bit is finding other things to do when the crave comes.

Now I,m a hater of smokers smoke .  :( ;) :):) But what other do is up to them...
That my 2c

I'm sitting here in my chair exhausted from climbing up and down hills hunting today (didn't see anything). It's a reminder that, even with tobacco out of the way, I still have a long way to go if I want to make it into my 90's. I've been a compulsive eater ever since I was a little kid and seldom made any progress against it. I once went on a crash diet combined with a strenuous job and dropped 70 pounds in a year, since then I've put it back on. Don't know what the solution would be, given that you have to eat to stay alive.

I've found hunger can easily be made to follow a schedule. As of right now I don't really eat or feel like eating until the afternoon, just by habit of having been very busy a couple mornings in a row. There are times when I can get in the habit of snacking constantly too.

Also don't buy your favorite foods, and find new low calorie foods. I can pig out on a pound of black licorice easily if I let myself buy it. I've found steamed broccoli a reasonably quick and tasty way to fill up. But I'm still young enough to burn calories easily enough, so I don't pay too much attention to what I eat.

I know this is centered around cigs but a lot of folks in my area have started using zyn pouches. Myself and many of my coworkers have chewed for years and recently many have started using the "zyn" nicotine pouches in place of it. It's actually made a big impact here, many of my coworkers haven't had any kind of tobacco in a few months. I think it's been two months for me. I know you don't chew but if you have those zyn pouches available in your area it may be worth looking into!

Ive seen those, might give em a try if I get caught without gum.

My sister's father in law came over today. Dude is 81 and still smoking away. He is in the early stages of dementia, probably be worse off if he quit!

I need to add exercise to my life, even if just a little bit and nothing extreme. We have a big parking lot at work without much traffic in and out, so I should be able to spend at least 30 minutes walking for break and lunch. Which I did today in fact. I'm still shocked at how out of breath a gentle incline gets me these days. I think a good goal is to get my cardio health back up, even just a modest amount.
