My first racing axe I bought 35 years ago.
6 lb. Hytest with 28" handle. I had others but this one was my favorite.

Alan Boyko from Port Alberni, BC. made me that axe.
The homemade handle was 2 inches longer originally but I tuned it for my arms by shortening it 2".
Alan polished that axe head so good it was like a mirror. He said "now you got a complete shaving kit".

I mirror polished a few axe heads and sharpened them way beyond what I consider a 'sharp' axe. When the edge shaves hair off your arm in one pass your pretty close. To actually cleanly shave hair takes quite a bit of work. I'm talking down to working through the abraisive grit sizes down to 5000grit. The few axes I have with that time & effort put into them stay inside wrapped up in an oily rag. As much as I would love to take them down to my woodpile/chopping block, I know 5 mins chopping ozy hardwoods will ruin all that effort, which is kinda a shame really. That 6lb Hytest is a special bit. You don't see them often. Damn fine steel.

Somewhere I have a picture from the old logging camps of the camp barber shaving a guy with a double bit axe. So shaving sharp may have been more common than we want to believe. Would cut great till you found a knot or really dense piece of wood.

This came home with me. Total cost nothing. Original handle just needs a clean up when I get around to it.

Nothing is always a great price. Even if it is abused and requires work. Nice find for certain.

A certain Tim promised a double bit Collins very similar to one I already have.

This is what showed up instead, the shipping and receiving folks at work are starting to wonder about me.

Good thing I had a sharp knife with me, it still took quite a while to uncover this.

A really sweet 6lb Plumb with the original handle.

It’s going to meet a lansky puck this weekend and the some boiled linseed oil for the handle.

He definitely wraps em up good for shipping.
