Recently had an MS880 in for an 088 intake and carb upgrade, limited coil removal, and no oil. Cylinder work went fine, coil no issues, and oiler... well I found a worm that was a little looser than I liked so in went a new OEM worm AND oil pump gear. Saw pumps oil when fired.. win.

Saw is wearing a 41" .404 Stihl bar and Stihl chain. Full skip square. I cleaned the bar and opened up the oiler holes. At this point I tested it in some VERY dry red oak and it oiled... but nothing over the top. I rinsed the tank with diesel.. no change.

Owner is running it and says oiler performance is not what it was new (he purchased this saw new). My question is what is crapping out? Is the pump bore worn? Could adjuster bolt O-rings cause this issue? I'm open to ideas but again this is a working saw and I hate to throw parts at it. We have gone from no oil to oiling.. but barely enough for a 41". I would think an 084/088/MS880 would slobber a 41" bar.

Was the new pump different than the old one?

Did not change the pump, just the driver and driven gear. When it came in no oil pumped with no bar. Changing the worm and driven gear made it pump oil. At that point I thought all was good. It was fogging oil off my 24" test bar and loop. The 41" was marginal. He has confirmed it.

The internals of the actual pump may be worn out. Did he ever run used motor oil in it.

Nope. His saws are worked hard... beaten.. but get new bar lube and decent oil for mix.

The problem is almost nobody wipes off the caps before filling up the oil and gas. Stuff falls in... not good over time. Dump the oil tank, run mixed gas through the oiler until it flushes out the oiler hole. Dump gas and fill with oil. That has fixed 95% of oilers that didn’t work for me. The only two didn’t work because one had debris in the pump that was too large to flush out and the other was plain worn out.

I'm hoping that's all it needs. Not sure about it though. The adjustment screw seems to just freewheel. Find out when I get a chance to get it on the bench.

That’s interesting, it should have a stop? At least my 064 does.

Yep my thoughts were well sh*t when I found that. I know it is supposed to have a stop. Hopefully it will work without. Nothing cheap for the darn 088's except the spark plug hahahahaha!

Steve the short answer was no. But the saw is coming in again...other tree service issues.

I need to fully pull the pump apart and clean it all. I imagine it's just built up mung. The operator's chains also do not help his situation (the problem does NOT apply to one saw....).

Owner put it right back to work... was able to take the whole stem off easily for the final pick. Root flare took all of the 123 dl of .404.

Cutting white oak like that is a great test of saw oilers. Did he send that tree to the mill? Nice stick.
Had metal in the first log. The logs were not that great. All of his logs go to a local mill as that is where he parks his equipment. I bet Steve [mill owner] makes that one into firewood. I do all of their saw work too.
