What's the best way to remove a flywheel?

What's the best way to remove a flywheel? I generally avoid it when I can, but beating on a crankshaft 50 times to knock loose a flywheel is ridiculous. I don't like putting a hammer to precision machinery.

If you want to be proper they make actual flywheel pullers. HLS sells them cheap.

Before I bought the tool I’ve had good luck with backing off the nut to the point that it protects the threads, hold the saw by the flywheel and give the nut a sharp wack.

Get a flywheel puller cheap and easy.

it really depends on the saw...some have "threads" where you can just put a "steering wheel" type puller on it an pop them off. the Stihls mostly have the threads inside so a cheap puller just works perfect. Most times without either of those options available some bolt loosener some heat and some brass hammering will get it done. Patience matters. let it soak baby. I like acetone, atf and diesel( equal portions) as a bolt remover

I've done dozens this way no damage
The pullers i have never seem to fit.

I like the hold by the flywheel ideas. The method I've used relies completely on shock into the shaft and not a combination of pushing the shaft out of the flywheel. I do warm them up with a torch in hope that helps.

I also think part of my problem is not wanting to hit too hard.

Some days it feels like it’s going to be an angle grinder, hammer and chisel and maybe about a 12 pack so there’s less regret while doing it.

If I can, I use a puller. If not, I loosen the nut flush with the end of the bolt, then hold the saw by the top handle so it can swing, and tap the crank with a hammer.

I use a metal hammer, but I don't swing any harder than I have to (usually take 3-4 swings). I find I have to clobber it with non metal hammers, and they sometimes just don't work.

I have never damaged anything with this method.
