I am traveling for work and the local HD has a Makita 6421 for sale for $289. What are the pros and cons of this model? I need some info before lunch tomorrow when I head home, lol!

If it's not beat to hell just buy it. You won't regret it. They stopped renting the 6421 over my way and switched to the 6100's.

6421 is a heck of a good saw and even better to put a 7910 top end on. I guess the 6421 has a higher limit on the coil than the 7910 does from the factory.

What he said. I don't see them go much below 289 if at all these days IF you can find the 6421s. Buy an oil pump rebuild kit in case it doesn't oil well, add a second outlet to the muffler before the cat (or gut it), and enjoy.

+1 on the 7910 top end.
More than an HP more and no downsides.

Don't fall for the AM 84cc big bore temptation.
The OEM is more reliable and just as powerfull.
6,6kg, 6HP, 28" bar very nice combo.

I think the 6100, 6400, 7300 and 7900 all share the same chassis and crank. You can upgrade the piston and cylinder from any to the 7900. Recently I think I read that Makita discontinued the 6400, (maybe even the 7300?) as the 6100 was doing so well.

I think the 6400 has a little more torque than the 6100 for nearly no weight penalty: a good saw. $289 seems like a good price for a middleweight saw that should handle a 20-24” bar just fine.

6100 is totally different. 6400/7300/7900 is the same besides p/c.

Personally wouldn’t buy it unless you plan on adding a 7900 top end to it.

It’s a huge saw for 64cc. Great AV though, and in the 79cc model great power.

Add tax, the cost of the 7900 top end, and the other unforeseen expenses and you’re right near the price of a Stihl 044/046 which should hold its own against the 7900 and hold its value better.

Just my opinion. Sorry for the buzzkill.

What about the smaller 4300 saw? It was around $175.

I believe those are the Makita version of the 421. They are pretty bulletproof proof. The ones (4300) that I have seen at HD have been very beat. Much more abused than the 6421 there. Maybe it’s just my local HD though.

6421 fat and slow? Not when you take the cat out and tickle the ignition timing. Cylinder untouched on this saw. Same b/c.

Noticed that too, perhaps folks who really have no clue what they're doing tend to rent a smaller, less intimidating saw. The ones near me looked like they'd been cutting dirt and concrete for years, never actually purchased any of them.

Went by there before the meeting. All saws were ROUGH! As in, I’m pretty sure they had scored pistons. Oh well, I guess I don’t need any other colors saws!

If it's damaged offer $125 for it and tell them it needs a new cylinder. They can't charge $300 for a broken saw, and expect you to pay it.
