I might be on to something .Clutch side seal 042/048 .Hard to find but I found at least one I think 20 x 35.8 x 4 ---SKU MD 172133 --Google search with seal dimensions---
Might have found a bearing that could be adapted 20x 42 x 12 .Double seal which could have the seals removed and possibly be ground to thickness with a surface grinder if needed .
If these would work they are cheap like 5-6 bucks a bearing and $3.50 a seal .

The picture of just the caliper is showing the depth from shouldered side of outer race to the inner race. So actually even though the outer race is an overall dimension the inner race pretty much lines up with the machined part of the outer race so must have the narrow inner race for crank clearance . Wonder if a person could use an overall narrower bearing with a machined spacer to take up width.

That's kind of my thinking too .Evidently a more narrow bearing is available and so is the seal .I personally have always wondered about it but never really delved into it other than research bearing and seal sizes .
Fact in spite of the fact I have the master interchange book on bearings and seals from Bearings Inc I had to search on the internet to find the sizes I previously mentioned .
Being a hard headed old red neck and have never failed to repair just about anything I put my mind to in spite of lack of parts I figure nothing is impossible .Some times it takes a long time to figure it out though .Again, might work, might not .---If this stuff was easy anybody could do it ----:)

That plate looks like it could use a polish to get that varnish off, possible that it ran good till some of that varnish popped loose and plugged a passage in the carb.

WS-3 carb. I'd clean that plate up and put it back in.

I’ll give the plate a better cleaning and try it again.

Thanks for the tips.

Also thanks for posting the pages from the big book. I went and pulled mine out, I had forgotten I have one haha. I am missing the 042 service manual but have the 048. Interesting.
I checked what it said for the carb and it read WS25.

I been thinking about your bearing dilemma and a video that tree monkey had made makes me think it could be a solution?

If you are trying to fit larger O.D. Bearings you could fit the crank case into a lathe and turn the bearing bore larger. Or if you need it smaller a guy might be able to weld the bearing bore and then turn it on a lathe to the needed size.

Story. What started me out was the first Stihl I ever owned which was an 048 with a spun bearing from Oregon .The seller was honest about it .At that time the bearing and the seal could still be found at a dealer but my goodness the price was high .I raised the metal in the seal pocket with a prick punch and used Locktite "press fit " and it held .Then I got to researching this German act of over engineering .
That saw runs fine although it gets little use but needs a set of rings which are just Stihl 038 Magnum which I've never done .I will eventually .
Then from the internet forums I found out how many people had this model and 042 consigned to the shelf in need of a bearing and seal .There has to be an alternative method .

That’s strange my 048 Ipl calls for the ws14 just like an 042

It’s still the same carb series, WS. Makes me wonder if there were different revisions to these carbs ? Is that a “thing” lol. This 042 is I think a 1976? So an early one I think. WS3 being a lower sub sequent number and then the 14 as you found in your book and then a 25 in mine.

In this conversation of the 042/048 I have the service manual on the 048 and it's the only explanation anywhere I've seen that explains the self advancing ignition coil .Having read that fact it dawned on me why one of my 048's would not rev fully .
Then coincidentally on another web forum I won't mention a guy who went by "Gifts of Wood " had a coil he didn't recognize and I identified it and later bought it for 5 bucks from flea bay and that solved the problem .Every little tid bit of info is helpful if you can just remember them all .

MS311 compression??

Got dads coil in , bolted it on , great spark , saw still will not start , tried gas in plug hole even , will not start.

Pulled nut off flywheel, looks good.

Used drill to crank motor with plug out and thumb over hole, I can hold thumb over hole with compression release off position...

Getting guage tomorrow...

This damn saw is driving us crazy.

Ok yeah he said one called for a ws25 on the 048 I’m wondering if that was the super that had that. Supposedly the 048 supper had better timing numbers and a bigger carb. All 4 of the ipl’s I had call out a ws14 for the 042 and 048. Didn’t realize they had some others available.
