Hell I'm slow. Especially on used or oddball saws. I've had some saws well over a year before I finally got around to doing them. I can't fault anyone for taking a long time to get a saw done. Once I got behind, I never was able to get caught back up.....I get it.

Communication is key in any business though. You can't hide from people. If you answer the phone, and return messages, most people are ok with waiting to get a good custom job done. Hell how long is the wait to get a custom rifle built?

Stuff like this with Terry.....like taking money from a man in New Zealand, and never sending him a saw. Now that stuff hurts all of us guys that do this for a living.

Who wants to send money to another saw builder after getting long dicked by one already?
Exactly!

You’ve always been upfront about wait time and stood behind your work, that’s the difference. Reputation is everything

Perfect clarity goes a long way. My first, and only so far, experience with having someone else mod my saw turned out well, but communication sucked. Hardly any honest answers (at least it seemed that way). Every reply seemed carefully worded to imply the answer I wanted without actually saying it, so I couldn't trap him in his words, and it was impossible to pass an accurate judgement on the situation. All turned out well right at the moment I thought I got him, and the way it worked out made me wonder if vague answers is just his natural way of talking with no deceit intended.

Well.....Back when I started looking into ported saws or just getting ideas for pro grade saws for work, I had reached out to him and you, @Mastermind since youns were fairly local. I met with him one day at the shop he had in Wartburg and didn’t get a good vibe from him then. Last time I was through there, the shop was closed. From what I was told, he screwed the state on some basic repairs that were never completed but charged for. I know some loggers that used him and have saws pod for but haven’t heard anything from him and are still waiting! It doesn’t look good for him, but I did recommend you for port work.

Yup, you builders leverage skill, integrity, and trust.

It’s not easy sending a guy you never met FTF an expensive machine and money. The open comms go a long way in easing all concerns.

Enthusiast aren’t the type to piss off; the power of the whole forum is better then any detective service.

You need to do a builder review on this. Get this out into the open so we can avoid another mishap from happening.

Sad thread. I got 3 saws from Terry when the Aussie dollar was worth something and 2/3 were great experiences, and the third he made right.
With no dog in the fight it’s easier to feel sorry for someone who has lost their way.

Like I said, I couldn't figure what to make of it, and considering the circumstances, and how it ended well, I feel it not worth mentioning a name. The point was this could have been a perfect dealing IF he was a straight shooter communication wise. I'll just assume he didn't want to be straight because maybe he didn't want to say he's putting it off or whatever, which I'm fine if you tell me "I'm not going to touch your saw for 2 months (for example)", but to make excuses or vaguely beat around the bush will make a person suspicious even if there's nothing to suspect. I don't think they've ever had a bad review from what I've seen.

There is so much hoopla and horse chit about modified saws it's nonsense .My saw is better than your saw type .My builder ( so called ) is better than yours .
I don't know why anybody would even put forth the effort to build custom saws especially over the internet .
In my case I know how but I'll be damned if I'll ever get involved in the childish nonsense that goes on .My only competition is myself as I have nothing to prove and I damned certain don't need the money .--rant over ---

Not a surprise for me either.
I had 2 of his saws, the 1st was fantastic... The 2nd... I had to finish the job by myself.

That is a shame, I was a newbie on AS, and the fund raising for his wife was the 1st I participated, I still have 2 "cutting cancer" t-shirt. What a way to thanks the community.

He seems to have turned really bad.

For me Al.....and of course I can only speak for myself.....

I built houses for about thirty years. Then I got sick from a tick bite. Lymes disease put me on my ass for a couple of years. During that time I found ArboristSite and started reading about modded saws. I drag raced for many years, but had to sell my race cars when I got sick....so I knew a little bit about performance engines. I thought I could afford to build a high performance chainsaw, so I gave it a try. Terry Landrum had a GTG/build off not too far away from here.....the saw was the MS460. I threw my hat in the ring, and I won.....barely. Before I left there that day people were asking me if I could build a saw engine for them. I don't think I'll ever have the stamina to build houses for a living again, but I can work in a shop on saws to pay my bills.

And that's how we got here.....

Strap-on made me a skeptic of chainsaw porters a few years ago. Since then I've only had 2 saws ported by online boys and they are both within a reasonable driving distance for me, one within 2 hours. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I feel for you guys that got fukked..what I'd do to a dude that fukked me for a couple thousand dollars wouldn't be good for either of us...I boiled over just a couple hundred dollars with strap-on.

I'd like to be positive and say hopefully people get their *s-word back but when you haven't heard a word from someone in over a year the odds aren't in your favor.

At that time Lymes was rare in Tennessee, so it took a long time for a doctor to diagnose it. They found out that I had HepC while they are checking me out too. So for 18 months I did the interferon treatment too. I was a sick mfer.....

I'm not poking fun at people who make a living or part of a living reworking saws .It's just not for me having to put up with the BS that could be involved .
FWIW I was born into a long line of metal workers and mechanical savants probably going back to the middle ages .It's always been easy for me so I don't make a big deal out of it .
Fact when my middle brother was business agent for local #32 IBEW in Lima Ohio and he presented me with a 30 year pin he pointed out that in over 150 years I was the first of the oldest sons who broke the mold and was not a machinist/tool and die maker .On that I'm self taught but never made a living from it .

Randy, interesting stuff! I knew you won a 460 competition, I had no idea it was your first saw!

This thread is so sad to read, because Terry was once a respected builder, and the fund raising, etc.

I guess if you have a group of good and generous people, you are always vulnerable … but you also don't want it to be any other way. Luckily this site also comes through for some who have really been taken, like with JMS.

Randy, thanks for being one of the "Rocks" of our community, and leading by example.
