It was very strong Mike. You did a good job.
Have you done any testing on that saw with larger muffler openings? Each saw is different. You MAY pick up even more. You'll never know without testing though.

I guess I'm a little superstitious about that kinda stuff … if I get lucky and something runs as well (or better) than I expected … I don't touch it!

I remember in High School a guy had a freaky fast 396 Chevelle, beat almost everyone and turned great times at the track, but it was not enough for him, he just had to have a 427. So he ripped the 396 out and traded it (along with some cash) for a 427 … and, you guessed it, the car was slower and his old "freak" motor was gone!

I'll play with different mufflers on Blue Beast, but Flying Tiger is staying just like it is … I don't need more from it. Ditto my MOFO 460 and my CFB Hybrid!

I’d like to see more contrasts between the two saws you have in your pictures.

Your thoughts and opinions too please........

Thinking of running 404 ?
Be interesting to see how the bottom end of these two holds up with .404. I wouldn’t hesitate to try it on the 572 with the dual 6203’s. Especially in dirty firewood. I just don’t see a need for it personally for my use logging. I’d think with a 20/24” bar these 5 cube might have the power to pull that in .404?

462 vs 500i isnt a fair comparison since the 500i costs more. For the $1300-1400 you're going to drop on a 500i, you could buy a ported 462.

So the fair question is: would you take a ported 462 or stock 500i?

Ported 462: lighter, louder (?), more powerful (?), no warranty

IMHO using both of them quite a while and after lots of testing, i have to admit.... stock, the 462 is the more complete saw all around. Not much to no difference in power up to 25", better filtration, better av design, cheaper and it needs noticeable less fuel than the 500i (the 500i needs more fuel than a 661 with the same work load!).
The 500i is a great saw and maybe the future but right now it doesn't have any advantage being "fuel injected".

Old post, but thank you for the info.. I have a good running old 440 but looking to upgrade maybe. 462 is sounding better.

Yes, it is very nice, especially with it being pretty brushy. I should add that it is not ported. I took the baffle out of the muffler, opened up the stock port, and added another port.
Old post, but I have an old but good running 440 and looking to upgrade to a 462 because it is sounding better the more I search the forums. I have the big Dawgs on my 440 and love them...grab big barky pines nicely.

You may have seen this already. http://chainsawrepair.createaforum.com/ported-saws/removing-spark-screens-does-it-make-a-difference/

Feeling this or that isn't something I put much faith in. Without a reliable dyno our options are limited to testing in the wood, which has inconsistencies in results as well. Other than some idling issues here and there with openings 90% or better, I have just have never seen anything negative power wise, in fact the opposite. [emoji111]
I really like that sentence ..feeling this or that isn't something I put much faith in. Dyno testing, using torque wrench and a tach is a good thing...why guess. A lot of people have the placebo effect that any change they make on a saw improves it when in reality it may not. I would rather have durability and reliability over performance....of course I understand people using their saw for competition may have performance as prime goal which often times on a working saw reduces durability, reliability and uses more fuel. Thanks for this old post
