Very good "coachable opportunity " here...
1. Storm downed trees are not for rookies.
2. Reading "compression" and "tension" on storm downs takes care and skill
3. While the wood is valuable, your time is also
4. Have a plan, develop a process and move slowly
5. Practice "bore cutting" under ideal conditions prior to "storm downs"

6- 10... Make friends with your local-est tree service guy and ask him to drop off a load of cuts to your yard. They will, you just need to approach him properly and let him know access to your lawn is safe and you will take the entire load. I find it much easier to have wood dropped off then to cut ,load , haul and dump at my yard...much safer too. "Friends and neighbors" call me all the time..."hey Angelo... You want some firewood? " ....that's a red flag for me....don't fall for it. It's never free, usually requires a crap load of saws, fuel, tooling, equiptment and some danger to get some "free" wood.

Been there! Honestly I woulda bailed with nothing but saws in the truck. It always goes better the next day.
Hahaha...believe me if I didn't have the wife I would've hauled ashes ASAP!
Gonna have to watch this weather REAL CLOSE...we're under severe
HEAT-WAVE...temps 101-103 for next 3 days or so!!
None of it is worth a heat-stroke!!

Great council Angelo...I understand that for sure.
What I've learned is many downed tree's look simple, yet if you don't have experience with them...they prove more than formidable!!
BRAVO!

Here's a good non wedge technique for top bind from my friend Rico on the west coast. I do it a little differently but this works really well:

Did he start boring in to the bind part?
Kind of hard to tell cuz the camera guy kept going for the ass shot.

I do that all the time on the landing or whenever really. Easier to do with a 372 or 390 size saw. With the 390 you can bore straight into the pinch when it closes and cut out the bottom of you do it right.

No all the action starts at around :36 seconds in. The real majik is the subtle upcut and plunge cuts at :39 sec. Like I said I don't do it quite like this, but the idea is to cut a bar width relief pocket so the bind cannot pinch shut far enough to catch the bar. No bore cut needed. It's a subtle action that isn't easily captured on video. What I like about it is it removes the potential for kick back in an improperly executed bore cut.

Yeah it's just basics. Not really rocket surgery level saw work. Easier on large wood with big saws, but once you learn to read the kerf its easy enough to use with any size saw and wood.

A video would be sweet, especially for us studs who don't do this on the regular, and are kinda doughy like! lol
Nope...he just took his truck and towing strap and snatched it plumb off the stump...now it may be 10-12 feet of semi-blocked wood.
He's keeping an eye on it...personal property.
Here you go, I needed to get this one cut up as I pushed it over a while ago and it was an eyesore with the rootball just hanging out by the accessory drive. It's not as big as the one in your picture, but hopefully you can see the principle.
I had just taken the teeth back a little on the chain because the rakers were too low and they were uneven so I evened them out too. It cut's nice, but it's a little grabby for bore/plunge cuts. I compensated for that by not pushing the saw straight into the wood and thru to the back, but cutting down and back at the same time which keeps the top of the tip from grabbing as much as if I went straight in. If I would have went straight in with this chain it would have kicked back pretty bad and you can damage the tip that way or get a saw in your thigh or worse .
Let the critiquing begin :D.

Always nice to have the log hooked to the skidder to pull it away as well :).
Looks as though there is still a bore at :47.

Funny I didn't hear the skidder running at the end.;) It works regardless. I'd be happy to show you how I do it any time Brett.

I meant cabled with tension so it pulls apart at the end.
You need to, I have lots to learn!
I use a similar method, but it looks as theres some added trickery to his I'd like to see in person.
Let's shoot for a cooler day, I ran the rest of the tank of fuel out of that 361 trimming a bunch of small stuff here at the house and I was drenched. Good day for hanging in the house.
