That is a sweet looking automated sharpener, to bad a home manual version isn't available. I can't see to many forking up what this automated model must cost. 20K???

In a busy shop, if you can free up one employee, or avoid hiring another, it can pay for itself quickly. If you do not have that type of volume, it is not the most cost effective sharpening choice.

For sure Philbert, you have to sharpen a lot of chains to off set the cost, for now I'll stick to my files. :)

There is a guy north of me on my chainsaw repair group that has 3 of them now.

I had linked him to the 3rd one for a really good deal = he snagged it.

He sent me 10 chains done on it. I was impressed.

He seems to be making $ hand over fist with them to have 3 going. ;)

Could you please post a few picks of the finished cutters? I'd like to see how they look.

Me?

Think I only took one out so far. I sent him a bunch of different makers to see how they did.

Was on this saw testing before sending out.

He must sharpen a boat load of chains to cover the cost of those machines. :) Set it and forget! Gotta love it.

let´s get this conversation started. I´m willing to share insights, knowledge, experience etc. Just let me know what you want to know regarding Franzen and I´ll be happy to answer. Cheers!

Im curious as to what the cost in USD this Machine runs. I go through enough chains I’d like to know how much it would cost me because I also know of a few local tree services I might be able to sharpen chains for.

Ballpark is $26,000, there are a few options to make it cleaner or faster that can add to the price.
In the local Stihl dealership they love it, in 6 minutes it will do a chain nicely unattended and a light on top signals when it is time to stick a new chain on it. The machine is in the middle of the 2 cycle area of the shop and which ever tech sees it first swaps chains and goes back to whatever he was doing. It runs 8 hours a day with minimal maintenance, and they are able to keep the wait time for drop off chains usually in the 2-3 day timeframe. They can slip an emergency chain into the que if needed. Many tree services drop off 100 or more at a time and get special pricing. They could not hire an additional tech for a year for $26K, even before benefits, taxes, etc. They love it.

Philbert - it would be plus adj/set up for each type chain. I do not remember if there are canned programs
Stens sells these here in the US, Nice unit but I recoiled at the cost. 20 years ago I might have jumped on it. It would run me ( apx) between $500-600/mo on 5 year biz lease. Total write off if there is enough bottom line to cover it. that is also considered personal property so I get taxed on it yearly. 7 years before it would be off the books tax wise. I likely have around 100 chains a month pass through the shop. So it might be possible. Been chewing on it since they became available just hate to make that kind of dollar commitment now days. I know, I know, ya only go around once and ya can't take it with you. But.............:babeando::eusa_whistle:
Interesting,
I can’t see Square being more dangerous, or how it would slice through protective cloths any easier than round. Has there been studies on this?
Sq chains hold there edge longer in my experience, and thus lengthens the lifespan for me.

It would be cool if a grinding disk could be shaped for sq on these.
The wheels can be but the approach of a typical chopsaw style grinder negates ( top down) it, although you can get close to the sq ground middle picture in Madison" info posted in this thread. but not the acute inside angles that can be achieved by hand filing with the proper file. Then there are the Simington, Silvey and Ziegler (spelling?) The last 2 are no longer made new. Those are/ were specifically made for SQ grinding , do take awhile to master though ( and can be quite frustrating at times- At least the Simington is to me still- lot of fiddling - That dang Murphy guy keeps sticking his nose in the works)

ahh---ok. I understand. This type of sharpening (square) is prohibited in Germany, because those chain cut through protective clothing quite easily.
We have done "experiments" with such geometries of course, but our machine will not be able to do those any time soon. Besides the danger of using such a chain, the lifespan of the chain itself decreases largely when sharpened square.
But of course I understand when enthusiasts want to push the limits;)

Enthusiast? I can promise you from first hand experience round will go through chaps too. They're cut "resistant" like FR clothing is "flame retardant".
