I'm finally going to add a hand winch to my mill. I milled 3 slabs of maple 2ft wide and about 15ft long and I was fatigued. I'm going to injure my wrist if I dont change something.

I bought this winch from harbor freight. They had two available, this one was the more expensive one and has the larger capacity. The reason I bought it was because it has a 40:1 ratio (worm gear) and its drive is 90 degrees to the drum rotation. The other one they had was something like 3.5:1 ratio and more like a boat winch that has a ratchet latch.

My plan is to ditch the cable and use a braded rope. I'll also shorten the handle so I can crank it faster. With the 40:1 ratio I already have all the leverage I need.

Anyone have pics of their winches?

First cut went great. Second sucked. My height adjustment bolt backed out near the end and my cut got wider on the power head side.
Otherwise that winch is awesome. Perfect speed. I still might shorten the handle another inch though. Also, the only down side is there is not free spool. Solution is to get a socket on the cordless drill to let the cable out.

This is the last plank I'll get from that log. I recut the one that I messed up last evening and only had time for that one. The land owner said he was going to keep the rest for a bench. Burns my ass a little because I planned to get 2-3 more from that log and it was just starting to get good. I know he was gracious enough to give me what I got but it stings a little knowing the best was yet to come.

They like to pull that after the free look. Never again. You pay for service or I take/buy the log. No BS. Got cheated out of 14' x 55" red oak last month. Worked to put down the trunk for free. Never again. Finally getting the new b&c tomorrow :)

I can’t like this sort of thing, working for a log deal that changes half way through..

It really sucks. But I guess we all get burnt at some point and learn a lesson in the process.

Like the pulley system.
I've been thinking of rigging a trailer crank stand as a log lifter to get one end up higher and off the dirt, then put the "v" frames made of scrap 2xs under it. I made the "v" two different elevations to keep a tilt or make it more level depending, only 2" difference.

Over the phone I talked to an old guy whose SIL had provided a burl 30"x4 feet by 5 feet. Started out okay til I stated "I get half you get half" but my sil wants some too. Still have that # in my phone but it's a fair round trip. Gonna need a written contract me thinks

Don't think, write. Happy days. You get the center two slabs. Take the prime be gracious to give away the rest. Makes for good PR.

Wrenched my back and things are on hold. Dying to mill with the forty and get the sixty rigged up. That mill will be home built steel NON adjustable width, for now. 18" stalks should do. Ten speed bike front wheels for transport. Drilling the sprocket nose to feed oil. 660 is going to an HO oil pump. Still need to figure out the winch on the sixty after testing the GB forty roller. It needs to be slower on the longer bar I'm betting.

Why the winch ? The chain not pulling / self feeding enough ? Raising the start end of the log higher helps the saw feed a little too ,maybe softwoods mill different that i am used to .

You feel like messing with 12,000 to 16,000lb hardwood logs and heavier, questions? No....good. Plus....I can mill uphill in a bad lay. And then there is this stuff called dead white oak and dead locust.

I wish I could prop up a log so I can mill down hill. Theres no practical way for me to lift some of these logs. I dont mess around with anything less that 2ft diameter and heavy equipment isnt an option.

My last chain I used was self feeding very well but you still have drag from the mill and everything. The winch does all the work for you. I'll never go back and once I get a remote throttle I'll be out of the dust and fumes too.
