I have done a fair amount of searching, and it seems there are no definitive answers as to what kind of power increase can be expected from a port job/carb tune/muffler mod in a work saw.
I watched several videos comparing modded saws, but just too many variables to know which is stronger.
I also see that a good number of mod specialists have attempted to construct a dyno that could be used to compare powerheads once a baseline is established, but nothing seems to have come to fruition.
So what I'm wondering is where does a modded Dolmar 6100 end up powerwise. It seems to outrun the 572XP stock (mfr rated at 5.7 hp) in videos I've seen, but I haven't seen it compared to a Stihl 462, which is rated at 6.0 hp exactly.
Mostly I just want to know for bragging rights, but I'm also curious about how much power can be increased on a saw that can actually be used for work not just for racing or showing off. If the stock figure on the 6100 of 4.6 hp is accurate, and it makes around 6.0 hp after modding for woods use, that is a full 30 percent - very respectable, and especially impressive if reliability is not compromised, and possibly improved.
What do you guys who do this stuff think?

To get hp #'s testing is required on a dyno, few people have that option in the saw game. Next best thing is cut times where you try to co tell variables as much as you can like bar, chain, wood etc. While cut speed & HP are closely related, HP is not the only factor that increases/decreases cut times. Just get your feet wet and get a known builder to port you a saw who does that model well & who is trusted. Don't over think every detail too much. If you don't like the saw after mods....sell it. This is where its important to choose the right builder, some builders work is more desirable than others and/or worth more on the used market. Discuss your requirements with builder like noise, fuel efficiency etc. Ask questions. There is nothing wrong with stock saws either, sometimes they can be the best option depending on your needs. Most important IMO is WHO you choose to do the work, not all 'ported' saws are equal.

Really just looking for a way to compare my saw to a stock saw. I bought one of the 6100's from Dan (AlfA01) a couple weeks ago. He had one done by Randy, but it sold before I got to it, so I ended up with the one done by EC Saws (Eric Copsey). It seems very strong to me, though I only have a couple hours of playing around so far. I haven't used many saws prior to this one, but I knew that I needed more power, but wanted it as light as possible, so a ported 6100 seemed ideal to me, plus the 6100 has some pretty good engineering - great air filter, great starter -no decompression necessary, reed valve strato system etc. So if this one hadn't been available, I would have done exactly as you guys recommended, and got a stock 6100 and have it ported by one of the guys you mentioned. Though I wasn't sure if TreeMonkey was still doing port work, and StumpShot is actually closer to me, but wasn't sure if he had much experience with modding 6100's.
I am mostly looking for a way I can compare this saw to stock saws. Like "it has the weight of a 357XP with more power than a MS 462", so that I can explain the value of a ported saw to guys who will run only stock saws. They won't even consider a muffler mod, they would rather pay more money for a saw that weighs 2 lbs more and makes less power.

If you want to show peeps the attributes of ported saw you are gonna have to have a stock and a ported saw they can run side by side lol.

Michigan gtg is in September. Bring it and we can run it against my stock 6100
