Does anybody have any experience with a cracked head in a smaller diesel ? These are extremely obsolete engines apparently . The cylinder was full of coolant . I pressurized the water passage beside it and it blew a lot of bubbles from the crackIMG_20190420_184956283.jpg . Any cheap fixes ?

Have you gone to a machine shop that work on cylinder heads. Old dealership I worked at back in the 80's, would send out aluminum heads out and have cracks repaired.

thank you . I hate to drop a whole lot in this thing.
This head gasket was changed by a local mechanic and the head went to a shop to make sure it was straight approximately a year ago .After the owner got it back it started burning coolant almost immediately. Not sure what happened .

Did you find out what caused it to happen in the first place?

the radiator was empty . It probably ran dry then overheated . I really can't find anything else wrong .

If you get it repaired, I'd suggest replacing the thermostat, water pump and flushing out radiator. Inspect all the hoses also, also check for any blockages in the cooling system.

Never should have run the engine any further after noticing excess coolant loss!

I know the above comment don't help You now, just saying : don't run it if You know it's broken.

Any chance of finding a used replacement?

Guys have offered some good resources to fix your cylinder head.
Now some advice.
You only get one shot at repairing it. Bring the head to a reputable shop that specializes in welding cast iron cylinder heads. In my experience, no one will try to weld a head that has been previously welded. Don't use up your one shot with your buddy bubba.
