been taking my time cleaning up some transfer out of a 385xp cylinder for a rebuild.
using just a scotch brite pad and some light 320grit sandpaper while listening to the tv.

this last three pictures shown some mild imperfections.

the first picture, the exhaust, has one on the upper left hand corner.
second picture and third, above the intake port, black little mark thats taking a long time to sand out.

That little spot at the base of the intake port, I'd keep going with a larger grit to remove it all, then smooth with finer and or scotchbrite.

Looks pretty good so far...I'd hit those edges around the exhaust port a little more.

It is kind of hard to tell 100% from pictures but it looks good. I use a dental pick and you can feel if it is transfer or if it is a hole in the plating. Some say if you can rub it with your finger nail and it does not catch you are good to go. If it is a small pit which what appears to be in the last of the three pictures, you can only make it smooth so don't get carried away with sanding it. On the picture of the exhaust port I am not sure about that, you want to make sure your ports are chamfered or beveled so a ring does't catch. So you might have some work to do there.

i did another black spot above the one shown, and it did sand out evenly. my fingernail does catch on the spot shown but it doesnt feel like a hole, but it could be.

as for the exhaust i duno what happened there either, inside the bore feels smooth against that area.
whats a good way to get that out without access to tools.

I wrap a 1/4 wood dowel in sand paper and that will give you something work the edges of your ports.

those cratex kits look nice. which kits a good starting point al smith.

i got those imperfections out and smoothed over.
but still having a heck of a time with the transfer, can you go too far with sanding/scotch padding? it feels smooth to the touch but its still visible.
ive been using 220grit,320 and 400 then the scotch brite.

You're worried over nothing .It doesn't have to be perfect to run both good and long .Don't be stingy with the oil now .
