Look at Cookingpellets.com, Rec-Tec pellets, Louisiana Grills pellets...if you can catch them on Amazon with Prime two-day free ship on the cheap, load up with the 40lb bags.

I have used quite a bit of pecan to smoke with (wood that is). To me it is one of the most versatile smoke-woods.
The Traeger is beyond the budget, but I admire you guys and your work done through them.

I've had good results with Pecan. If I were limited to one type of wood for smoking, it would be Pecan. As Stihl head said, it's versatile and works well with just about anything. I also really like the flavor it imparts.
Hickory would be my second choice. It's versatile with a bit stronger taste than Pecan.
I've used Cherry and Apple but they're too mild for my taste.
Mesquite, at least to me, has a harsh flavor and I don't use it.
I haven't tried Alder or Oak.
When you buy your pellets, look at the bag. Some makers mix Oak with the primary wood to make the pellets burn better.

Our wood choices seem to be identical. There is a lot of hickory in this part of the world.

I have three. 12" & 6" a-maze-n and a 12" generic.
They work great. Since getting the tubes, I've stopped using chips in my cabinet smoker. I use the tubes exclusively.
I use the 6" when I grill and want to add a little smoke flavor.
I'll be using them with the Traeger as well. It doesn't put out near the smoke I thought it would and the tubes should fix the problem.

Happened to catch these on sale the other day for $3.99 lb. Gave them a good rub and smoked them for 6 hrs with hickory and cheery wood. I am starting to like this rib smoking thing! :Dribs.jpg
