Did this one yesterday 4’6” of cottonwood that had repeatedly grown into the sewer line.

Here's two me and @Scotty Overkill did.

Didn't get a stump shot on this one but that's a black walnut a little over 4' at the base! It ended up being hollow which really sucked!

Bark pattern on that tree is a give away that there could be issues inside the tree.

Yup sure did that's Scotty's 1959 Contra with a 42" bar. That was when my 661 was still M-tronic it wouldn't start that day so it was just posing for the picture. Hahaha not an issue anymore though!

This red oak was lightning split and the top blown off and hung in another tree. After conferring with a logger friend a plan was hatched that didn't include me being hurt. Then had to wait a few days for the winds to subside. Finally got to use the 3/4 wrap on this saw as I stayed on the one side only. Was a goofy growth on the back so a high stump with the first Humboldt cut I ever attempted. After I wish I could have videod the falling was pretty neat to see and did just as the logger predicted to the T. Then was busy and forgot about posting.

The bark isn't the typical pattern. This can happen with any big tree, seems when they get near over mature the bark gets goofy looking.

Had an odd lean towards the house and back towards the excavator, didn’t know it was hollow until the wedge came out. Opposite the barn was a house and 2 campers, and to the rear is the excavator with a bad starter that couldn’t be moved. Hit the ground nice and even and layed flat, then about 5 minutes later it just rolled about 1/2 over to the side. It was a really weird tree

An old trick I learned on here. Take an ax an give the tree a few bangs. If hollow inside you can usually hear it.
Helps just prior to felling it.

I did! No echo, sounded solid. The surrounding wood was good and stout. It was 46 or 48” at the cut, pretty big for around here

I know playing with the fir or the cedar you will a hear different kind of solid when she’s rotten it won’t echo like hardwood can. Cheaper way it get buy a coring setup.

Another way to tell if you suspect the tree may have some rot or possibly hollow is to vertically bore through it low at the base. You'll be able to tell both by the saw dust colour and how easily your saw bores through it what condition it's in. Then just make your falling cuts a little higher up.

Good way to have one pop off the stump, if you’re going to do this make sure it’s not where your hinge is going to be.
