Said to heck with the neighbors ran the saw for science and stuff.

Nice test Steve.

It would be interesting to see what modding the Motor (oops engine) would do to those signals. Would raising the transfers up or intake floor down shift those points?

Saws don’t need impulse to run at WOT, the Venturi will pull fuel out of the wet side and the open needle out of the fuel line through the pump side. They need impulse to fill the wet side for starting.

If anyone wants to question this, look at the build threads for the China 440’s this year. Impulse line geometry was wrong. Nearly no impulse, saw ran just fine but wouldn’t start or restart for shít.

Edit: Wrong info. Saws need impulse to drive pump at all RPM it seems.

Does this mean General Motors (GM) has secretly been making hybrids for about a century? Did steam engines have hidden gas tanks? Are motorbikes just the wrong term for a two wheeled gas engine powered bike? I'm confused now so I'll sit back. The strato subject has gotten so far off topic we ended up on the beach with the 'hoover lady'!!

Video raised some questions for me.
If we’re seeing an average pressure in where the gauge tends to visibly settle, below zero at idle, above after throttle blip, what factors are involved?
At WOT wouldn’t velocity pressure come into play?
Air/ fuel mix has mass, was in motion, then must stop. It’s the kinetic energy plus static pressure that equals total pressure. Total pressure minus static pressure equals velocity pressure.
Does this show an efficient intake or an inefficient intake?
Muh head hurts again.

I take it back.
Those principles would only apply to fluid flow in a pipe or duct.
Maybe in the intake tract or carb bore.
Crankcase isn’t the same. It’s a chamber of constantly changing volume.

Is it too early to drink?
Can’t drink all day if you don’t start in the morning!

Also......
If the crank pressure averages positive, one could say flow would be backwards out the intake, but that’s obviously not the case.
There’s more to it. We’re seeing an average of chamber pressure throughout its negative and positive pressure sine wave which takes into account the neutral pressure and primary compression events.

Intake open only would be more difficult to measure.

I’d like to see this same test done on a reed valve engine on both sides of the reed cage.

You just made muh brain itch Dave. And no it’s not too early to drink.

Thanks for running that test @Stump Shot , very interesting.

I would have thought a 2 stroke crankcase would act much more different then a 4 stroke, but it's quite similar, at least to the 1.4 turbocharged engines. I use crankcase vacuum/pressure to test them for fractured pistons.
Engine warm, 8-12"h2o at idle. Snap throttle, goes to zero, then back. If you see pressure, pistons are cracked.
