I bought my MS660 kit from Hutzl in October this year, it arrived to Australia about 7 days later and cost $225 USD landed and it certainly looked very good. I followed the advice of others and bought an OEM little end bearing, gasket kit and decompression valve but besides that I used all the farmertec parts.

The kit went together really well. I followed the videos of Tractor Tech to do it - so thanks for uploading if your out there reading this.

Cases went together really easily with the hot and cold method, however I did inadvertently push out one of the crank bearings a bit which meant my oil pump wouldn't go on. Once I had tapped this bearing back in it was all smooth sailing. Assembly took about 5 hours from start to finish I think. I wasn't missing a single part from my kit - not one. In fact I virtually didn't have any extras either...just one M4 screw which I think I was meant to use on the chain tensioner cover plate (I actually put a little black slot head screw here which was also M4, and which I had two of in my kit).

Squish was measured at .020 on one side and .023 on the other which I think should be fine.

The saw started on the fourth pull which was exciting (and relieving). I am going to use this as a dedicated slabbing/milling saw and must admit I am a bit nervous as this is heavy duty work. I'm conscious that Tractor Tech blew his machine up in short order so I am going to run mine at 33:1 mix in the hope that the extra oil will at the very least give me extra piece of mind.

I'm going to my mates property this weekend where I will try to break the saw in gently before making some slabbing cuts. I'll keep you posted on how I go.

I've done a good deal of milling with them (Oak + Hickory) w/o any failures (except a AM piston pin bearing after about 10 tanks). I like to use the Cross P+C, but the bottom ends seem to hold up very well.

Thanks for the feedback fellas. It’s good to hear others having positive experiences with the kits. I forgot to mention that I checked the cylinder carefully and it didn’t have any of the sharpness issues around the ports that others have had. Interestingly though, there was clear evidence that someone had been in there with a dremel and filed off the edges of the ports. Perhaps they have been making improvements to the kit following feedback?

More likely luck of the draw, some 12 year olds do better work than others, but glad you got a good one.

Often it is the bottom of the exhaust port (which you can not see) that is not properly beveled, even when the top looks good.

I finally took my saw out for a test this weekend. It has been an outrageously hot summer so cutting timber hasn't been very appealing until recently. I put two tanks through it and noted that at the moment its not very powerful. My mates genuine farm boss was literally twice as fast as it through the same 40cm piece of timber. Is this because its still breaking in? The saw starts easily and runs well, but I haven't leaned it right out yet.

How much power gain can I expect when its broken in and tuned up properly?

Did you check the port timing of the cylinder? Or the port width (especially the exhaust port), and how did the transfers look?

Some saws will gain during break in, but after 2 tanks it should be running better than what you are describing.

Perhaps your cylinder needs some improvement. I think a lot of them have the exhaust too high, etc.

Hi yz250.

Welcome to the forum. And what a nice write up...

As wood chopper says a vid would help. You have to upload to YouTube and share/link here

Also as Mustang mike says port timing can also be a problem on some of the cylinders.

I think both would be a good place to start

Then I’d say if you check revs with a tach, it helps my deaf ears. But others prefer not to use.

Then tune carb and listen for the 4 stroking and the cleaning up in the cut.

Let us know what you intend to do.

Cheers

The pto bearing needs to go through .040 because it fits up against the oil pump. When I install the bearing I put an oiler without the piston and bolt on the case and heat the case and bearing falls right into the indention on back of oiler, thus it can't fall through plus it is exactly where it needs to be. Tip!

Hi All, Thanks for the replies. I didn't do any timing measurements on the ports which I regret now. However I do have an electronic tachometer, so I will do some tests there and see how it goes and then report back with some videos.

Mine measured about 93,123,90. I'm not going to use that cylinder, but it looks to me like it might not have much low end power. Does yours 4 stroke a lot while cutting?

Wow, those are lousy #s!!! Plus, a 90 on the intake would suck gas like crazy!

When you need to cut the base to get the exhaust right, and add gaskets to get the intake right, it is time to use a different cylinder!

I don't think so...not exactly sure what that is though. I did notice the clutch slipping at one point though.

It should a little bit while there’s no load on the chain/engine but then clean up in the cut/ load on the engine.

A spark plug colour check can also help. But best of all is a vid.

Here’s a link that may help you understand a bit more. But if your still unsure, best to ask more Q's

http://www.madsens1.com/saw_carb_tune.htm

There’s two .wav files in the link

This the second one you can hear the 4stroking http://www.madsens1.com/sethi.wav

Edit; just reread this and I think it was autocorrect-ed this morn. So I re edited to “should a little bit”
