I just got this project from a friend. He said he thought it was an 046. What do you guys think?

It’s missing the muffler and sprocket, and has a broken brake handle. Other than that it looks to be complete. I’m thinking about rebuilding it over the winter.

Looks to potentially be a 046R model. 3/4 wrap handle, dual spikes.
Does it have the west coast clutch cover?
Might even have the HO oiler on it

On a side note, don't lose those spikes. They are specific to the 046/ms460 and won't line up properly on other saws.

You dont need that part anyways.

Agreed, as with the chunk out of the recoil cover. It will work just fine without them. I’ll probably run them just like they are. I’m building a worksaw, not a shelf queen. It just looks a little better when they’re not all busted up.

Nothing wrong with a few battle scars. They add character.

I had 2 Ported 046s and couple projects and hoarded parts. Down to the best one. I still have a new HyWay dual port muffler if interested.

Is it scored?

Nice saw.

The piston shows some pretty significant scoring. The cylinder doesn’t look too bad. It might be usable.

I’m still trying to wrap my head around exactly what happened to it. I don’t know the history of it. A friend of mine got it from another friend who had taken it into the saw shop. He was told it wasn’t worth fixing.

When I got it the jug was put back on. However, both the rings were completely gone. The flywheel side crank bearing has a significant amount of lateral play in it. I’m thinking maybe that the bearing let go, then it broke a ring or two. Not sure exactly...

When purged I sold a really nice D cylinder. Don't be in a rush, just keep an eye out. They do come along. Tree smashed or run over etc. Usually all smashed but guts are good. I will survey what I have left.

Looks like they ran it without an air filter

Real nice 046 R, but I don't think that SN corresponds with a D jug. Got another pic of that combustion chamber? (there were some late issue ones).

I've seen intake ports like that before, they are not centered, so they are not symmetrical.

I have saved worse jugs than that. Look for Randy's video on cleaning the transfer, and Meteor pistons are very reasonable.

My speculation is that when the bearing went the seal went, and the P+C got a little scoring from the air leak, but I have seen much worse.

That saw looks pretty complete, you are lucky. Since they don't make an AM 460 yet, parts like the intake flange are hard to come by.

AM bearings and seals are not expensive and seem to work well. Be sure to pull the limiters from the carb, and the Stihl Winter Filters (wire mesh) are not expensive, are easy to clean, and provide VG performance. Most 046/460s also like a timing advance of about .020, and some will benefit from lowering the intake port a bit (check where yours is at).

Good Luck with it, they are nice "Workhorses".
