I'm rebuilding a 55 rancher as a trade deal. I went thru the entire saw. Everything that can or was worn was replaced. It is a low hour origanal nice clean saw to begin with . then .... All put back together and tuning screwdriver in hand. No spark. Tried 2 known good plugs. No spark. Unhooked the grounding wire. No spark. Changed coils and repeated previous tests. No spark. Wth!? These saws are so simple what am I missing?

There was a thread not too long ago on this site or the other one that a flywheel lost strength in its magnet and wouldn't make spark.

I ask because thats the only part i havent changed yet. It does have enough strength to pull the coil to it idk if thats enough to cause spark or not. However with every ignition part changed with a known good one and still no spark I'm very not happy. Any info is great. Thank you.

I would think a "bad" flywheel would be a really slim chance of being the issue. However, it would be a relatively simple item to rule out. Simply switch the flywheel with another saw and see if the problem moves.

I've been checking for spark the same way for as long as i can remember. Grounding the plug to the head and pulling the rope. I will check for cracked magnets tomorrow when i change flywheels.

yes the magnet in the flywheel could be weak. causing no spark.

Had it occur on an MS270 that had no spark. Flywheel took a hit, no magnets cracked or anything.

Apparently, a good hit to a magnet can make its polarity change. The magnets as North and South on a Flywheel. They are usually even labeled, at least in most Stihls. If they are no longer N/S, even if they have magnetism, they won’t make a spark.

So yes, it can occur.

I might have been the one who put a similar thing about a flywheel .For reasons unknown on an Echo weed wacker it lost spark .I of course thought it was the coil .Not so ,one of the magnets lost most of it's magnetism .The cure was to "stroke " that magnet with a rare earth magnet which brought it back .However over the course of the winter months it lost it again .
If memory serves this used to be common on I think model T Fords which at that time they had "charge coils" to renew the magnets .I never researched it but it's likely some place on the internet .
Some place in my little library of old stuff I have a copy of "Dikes automotive " that covers some of this stuff from the model T's up to about the 40's .If I remember I'll try to find something .

Thanks everyone. Due to cold wet feet and more expected cold wet weather it may take a few days to get back on this. For some reason the wife doesnt like chainsaws on the kitchen table.

Dad has replaced 2 poly 660 wheels for friends in the last 12 months due to bad magnets.
1 magnet strong,1 magnet weak.
