Well,

I went ahead and purchased one of these and once again, nothing beats oem.

I haven’t had the time yet to mic out the entire piston, but if they can’t even get the dome centered, I’m not sure how one could trust the rest of the piston.

Here’s some pics and a video of the dome. Please note, I say “Huztl” in the video, but it is indeed the Hyway piston I purchased here in the Classifieds.

The dome is so off, it’s noticable to the naked eye. The side marked “HW” is smaller.

Nothing beats OEM, nothing. I won’t be taking the time to measure the rest of it, because this piston won’t be going in any saw I build. If anyone wants it, they can have it for shipping cost. I lost money on it, but I learned a few lessons from the transaction. Was a cheap education.

The dome itself being off, unless they got it tight to the chamber walls (highly doubt), shouldn’t affect performance itself.

But, the fact that such shoddy machine work could be done at a factory makes me wonder about the overall product.

Granted, I believe this is still a prototype model. I shouldn’t be able to do better work than a factory in my garage. I could be a 12 pack in and get it more precise.

Now that it’s zeroed in, I could just clean it up easily. But I couldn’t ever use it.

so the "casting" is that far off ?
Casting seems to be round. There’s no runout on the lathe.

I’m not quite sure if the dome was cast and machined wrong, or just machined wrong.

One thing is for certain, on a strato saw where builders painstakingly massage .010 off of the right places for performance enhancements, I couldn’t trust a piston with such shoddy workmanship.

Here’s a standard Hyway 261 piston I purchased for testing ala TreeMonkey style on the 261.

No machine ribs on skirt either, but appears to be a much better product.

Interestingly enough, this cost me less than the prototype above.

I used to think builders were being fussy saying oem only. The past few years slowly taught me they were right all along. It’s not worth the gamble for me anymore.

Its rare when you can save a few bucks on "quality" parts when the bulk of the "costs" are really labor.

we just work too cheap.
and there is always a "cost" in finding out if a "cheaper" part will in fact work acceptably. Somebody gots to do lots of field testing and machine set up and all that....for...nothing really. also Im really grumpy till I get a right coffee in the AM

I have a metric shítton of 4047 alloy. I may just weld a dome on the better Hyway slug and see where it gets me.

Leave it at .080 high, test comp as I make dome smaller and smaller.

Hyway can contact and pay me for the R&D directly.

The increase in weight would preclude its use, unless I could bore the dome out underneath after welding.
