Just wondering what saw you guys have that you feel doesn't get the admiration it deserves.
For me it is my 254xpg ported by @rattler, little saw just impresses me everytime I take it out, I know the 242 and 262 booth get a lot of desevered admiration as they should but the 254 kinda gets overlooked I think.
most speak and crave after them 262's, but the potential a 254 has is huge, ported there is probleby more gain in an 254 compared to the gain we get out of a 262.
254 has probleby the biggest reputation as a reliable worksaw of them all in Norway, when I speak chainsaws with them old dealers they always praise the 254, and of course the new saws due their ergonomy, not once they've mention the more populare OPE saws like 346/357.

Husqvarna 42 Special. I put a Tecomec 242xp top end on it. I bought it from a tree service, it was smoked pretty early on in life- and well preserved. I didnt get crazy with it, it was so clean I wanted to keep it stock looking as possible. I love my ms241 dearly, but it wouldnt keep up with this 42 by any stretch.
In all fairness, I did gut the muffler... and I think I did some stuffs to the piston skirt. It doesnt sound "stock," but isnt loud.. and does well as a small firewood saw.
put Tecomec top end kit on a 42 Special a buddy of me own, without any modd I gotta admit it turned out to be a hell of a runner, seems them 242 Tecomecs are hot rods ;)

The 357 is another underrated saw. Unfairly lives in shadow of the 262 and it will give the 262 a run for its $. I personally like them better than a 262 honestly.

Not really underestimated but really never considered....The 36cc non strato Poulan. Cost $5 each - need fuel rehab and open muffler slots. They will do a lot of limbing w/ 14" bar.

I'll second that. You take care of it properly and put a good chain on, and these saws are a screaming bargain. I've put more hours on mine than all the others in the fleet combined. Would I take one over an Echo CS-400? No way but you aren't going to buy a running Echo for $30.00 either.

One thing strange about these saws: the cubic inch designation doesn't match the displacement on the smog sticker. My 2150 says 2.1 CID on the recoil, but 42cc on the smog sticker. The 2050 that my sister has says 2.0 CID/36cc. Not sure which one is correct, my 2150 is comparable to the CS-400 performance wise.

Dolmars seem to be going cheap right now. Dealers have them priced dirt cheap for an excellent Germain designed and built saw.
View attachment 141389

For real, they are on Fleabay NIB for under $500.00 right now. Think about it, a German made saw that will outrun a 346 or 261 in stock form right to your door for much less. I'm wondering if alot of Dolmar dealers are unloading them at cost and switching to another saw brand.

Or flooding the market to get a better foot hold in the game.

I spoke with a Dolmar dealer about it today. Makita is blowing out all the old Dolmars at discount. as a dealer, he got screwed. He stocks alot that he had bought at full price before the discounts. Dolmar rep promised he would make it right but nothing has happened.
I predict in a year or two, people will regret not having picked up a new Dolmar now while they're cheap. I'm seeing new 510's for $339, 5105 for not much more.

At dealers? Or online?

7900 is underrated too. Talk about a ms460 killer. It’s a shame dolkita never caught on as much as the other big two saw manufacturers in general actually. Lots of underrated saws from them.

The 6100 and 7900 comet to mind as real nice saws, but the smaller ones built on the 7900 frame are just too heavy for their size, even though they run well.

If each saw had power/weight similar to the two I mentioned, I'm sure they would be doing much better. And sometimes, the 7900/7910 on that frame size is NA, what's up with that???

Mike, I consider the 6400/6421 to be a farm ranch class type saw. It is priced competitively with a stihl 390/391 or husky 460/465 rancher and outperforms them in pretty much every measurable area. As far as NA... what do you mean?

My favorite chainsaw period.
I don’t see them as underrated. They usually get high praise when discussed. My DD357 wood be the last to go if the need arises. I recently used it to cut up a poplar tooth pic and it was a lightsaber! Only gripe I have is the leak prone oil pump lines and the stingy oiler, which is easy to mod for higher output.

I think overlooked is a better word. I was reading your thread on the oil pump mod and that inspired me to look into oiler mods on some of my other saws recently.

I really don't see that to be the case. I've run a 6400 a fair bit and it seemed to be everything a saw with that displacement should be IMHO. A bit more bulk than my 357 but not as much as my 372.

I would never put a 6400 in the "ranch" class myself. It's better than that IMHO

Now this just might be me but I feel that a good criteria for an "underrated saw" would be that's its price is a good 30-50% less than its comparable counterparts. Some of these saws listed are by no means underrated lol.

Troof! I think we are seeing the line blurred between underrated and underappreciated

Yes that was the word I was looking for it taken for granted. Like when I saw the 254xp listed. That saw ain't underrated it just that there's not enough to go around lol.

I have to say, for the moment with curent available saws, (ported) 545's! With the 5105 dolly, simply the best bang for the buck 50cc worksaw you can get in europe!

View attachment 141579
Now there is a saw along with the 555 that I could see being underrated being that alot of guys probably look right past them and go for the 550 and 562...

Edit to add: alot of people love the 346NE and 357XP. On paper the 545 and 555 respectively are very close in performance to those. We bought a new 555 at my work last winter and so far I love it
