She runs good. Really good.
Ran a 8 pin .404 on it and still pulled strong with the bar buried. Now wearing a 72LGX on a 8 pin.

Will take some mods like Jim said to get the 046 poly wheel to work. Hopefully the 0000 400 1300 coil will work on it. The rewind will need a 046 spool modded to fit the 064 housing. But if all works out the poly wheel should hyper up the 066's throttle response bit more plus another 5 oz weight saving.

Got the WJ carb converted to the non air compensating diaphragm flat cover to accept the lighter and oversized 1986 064 air filter and base. I think it breathes better then the 066 setup.

Got a pic here from last week of my 1996 066 alongside it with early 064 HD filter setup and being converted to non air compensation. That saw runs strong too with a new flywheel and piston Jim sent me. It's wearing the older 066's dual port muffler.
Forgot to take a picture of it in finished form, will post tomorrow.

I’m sure if you had it ported, cutting the squish and base, and all the grinding. You could drop a few more ounces.

If you really wanted to save weight the 064 cases and 066 topend makes more sense to me than stripping a 066.

Yeah every ounce adds up but at 14.5 lbs thats the goal I wanted.
Don't think I could ever get it down to 14.1 as Stihl claimed when they first introduced the 064 in 1986.
I bet it feels pretty nimble the way you have it setup with that 20” ES light

Might as well remove the metal clutch cover and put on one of the cheap azz farmboss plastic ones to save weight.

I got a couple of 1986 first year 064s. But I decided to build on the 066 red eye carcass because of the better 066 oil pump setup, plus the 064 crank and 066 piston won't have the same balance factor causing more vibration and hurting performance.
My early 064s and first year 066 have different crank part#'s.
Also the 066 cylinder base mods to match the 064 cases perfectly would be a PITA

I'll look at that idea, the metal covers are heavy. Only running a 20" with no dogs so I don't need a high flow cover. Got a aluminum chain catcher on order plus the fuel tank has a aluminum guard behind the cover .

Surprised me that the top handle on my 1996 066 is one oz lighter then my 064s and 066 red eyes handles.

Here"s my 1997 066 flat top sporting a 28"ES bar. Sitting on a Oregon 36" .050 , had a 36 ES but recently sold it. Last time I ran a 36 on the 066 was over 20 years ago.

This is the first year 066 to have the poly flywheel , decomp and heavier crank. So it's the perfect saw match for the 28"-36" b/c with dual dogs in my tree service.

The 066 Red eye 20" with its lighter bottom end, lightness and ergonomics will be the Ferrari to rip through the smaller stuff.:D

I just confirmed my above 066 is not a 1996 but a 1997 model (last of the flat top 066 before the EPA 1998 round tops).
Confirmed that with Dave's info:
1997_ 064/066 after serial# 133459523 is first plastic name badge.
Mine has a plastic badge and is serial#134989911
I'm proud to have the last good one:D
