What are you dressing your wheels with? I have a tiny dressing brick and it is getting small. Time for an upgrade. I have been dressing my wheels more often. Seems to keep the grind cooler. Thought about trying that Kool-Grind stuff also.

We used to have these things at work (link is just an example). . .

. . . then came some smart asses who couldn't get the grinding wheel dressed fast enough so they pushed the thing hard and not level to the wheel and in doing so ground the steel construction off.
These jackasses ruined 4 dressers in a single month so the boss stopped ordering new ones.

The first one we had was frequently used for 2-3 years before it got raped to death - so they can hold a whole while.

There are also dressers in form of a pen:

FYI, my workplace has nothing to do with sharpening chainsaw chains but we sharpen drills on a daily basis.

The small (1/2 x 1/2 x 2") stones that come with Oregon / Tecomec grinders work well, but have become stupid expensive. Some places are selling them for $12+ now! Each!

I bought a basic 'grinding wheel dressing stick' (1 x 1 x 6") for about $6 at a local farm store (also available at many hardware stores and on-line machine tool supply places); clamped it in a machinist's vise, hit it with a mallet, and broke it into 3 pieces ($2 each)! Choose the coarsest grit available for this application.

. . . that looks like the one I have . . .
I got mine at Fleet Farm. Also available from MSCdirect. Cheaper than Amazon or eBay. Will last me until I am an 'old guy'!

Frequent dressing of the grinding wheel, to expose fresh abrasive, is one of the 'secrets' I always stress.

I dress mine often. I notice when my Stihl wheels turn dark grey to black at the cutting area I get a chrome roll to the top of the tooth. Especially if you have to clean up a rocked/dirt chain. I also feel it creates less heat to the tooth.
Do you rotate your wheels or only use the same side everytime?

My Stihl dealer treats me pretty well. I asked some questions and we came up with this dressing brick. I included the part #. I also ordered a spare grinding wheel.

New to grinding but I now have one. One question I have is how does that wheel do both .325 and 3/8... I thought had to be different...

Those are new stock prices. Ordered from Stihl inc. last wk and came in today. They have always treated me well on most stuff.
The issue with the sizes of the grinding wheels I always felt depended on whether it was a new or more than half worn chain. That determined what size wheel I use. I still struggle on what size wheel to use on newer .375 LP chains.
Side note Stihl changed the material that the grinding wheels are made of. Wheel the color is different anyway.
I tried a pink wheel tonight and I still dont care for them. Always seem to make more heat.

Coarseness does look nearly the same, just different color and label is different than the most recent one I purchased a yr or so ago.
anyone else have an opinion on pink wheels? I have a few Oregon and the one I tried last night is slipping my mind at the moment. Might have had a Sabre or Forester label.
