It's more of a matter of what you're willing to pay. You can assume from the get go that all serviceable parts will need replaced, that and shop time will be a factor.
What you describe sounds like something in the 200-350 range. I serviced a minty 10 hour total use mag 2 that ended up selling for 550.

Obviously check for spark to help your peace of mind before making an offer. If it actually pops or fires up, see what they want for it. Sounds to me like a $200 saw if it's all there with no cracks/breaks anywhere and doesn't leak fuel and oil all over the place. If it doesn't even make an effort to run, explain how expensive it can be to rebuild, but you'd really like to get it running again...., (going for their sympathy and benevolent good will during this season of giving). LOL

Rule of thumb for me is offer what the bar and chain are worth if it doesn't run because everything else will cost you extra to make it worth much more unless you were to simply part it out.

All that said, you're gonna have fun with that saw!

Thanks for the input fellas, that's exactly what I was looking for because I simply don't have much knowledge on Stihls and what older models are worth. The owner is a coworker who I consider a good friend, so I'm kind of expecting to be offered a pretty nice deal on it. Especially since I've repaired a couple of saws for them and didn't charge them anything beyond the cost of parts.

Hello gentleman. I'm a long time member over at TreeBuzz but they told me you were the folks to talk to when it came to old school chainsaws.

I just got my hands on an 056 AV Magnum II. Been reading and downloading to get ready, looks like it will be a little more challenging to find parts than the 036 I just finished up.

I am sure I will have questions so thanks in advanced.

Welcome to OPE Frank. Fellow TreeBuzzer here. Lots of smart people here and I'm sure somebody will have the knowledge you seek when the time comes. Enjoy and be warned: there's a very contagious disorder known as CAD around these parts. Try not to get hooked

Okay like many of you I am looking for a part. It is that long gone 14x17 sprocket bearing. I tried all the places list above without luck. Any other ideas or does anyone have a one they don't need. I did manage to find 2 brand new OEM brake handles, if they ever show up. I am about to bore my sprocket out to 18mm since you can buy them anywhere.

Has anyone tried a Sintered Bronze sleeve bushing on a sprocket yet. The thought crossed my mind that since it only comes into play while the saw is at idle that it may work fine. I will probably only this saw a few times a year, certainly won't be my everyday saw.

Title seems fine to me. And I was gonna suggest the bushing route as an alternative as it's not that uncommon when improvising what is sometimes required to convert from one clutch drum setup to another on older saws..., .404 Mac spur drive to 3/8 rim on older 250's comes to mind. 'Course this method would be used to reduce either the the inner or outer diameter required of an alternative needle cage, not to simply substitute a bushing for the bearing which would inevitably bind. Motion Industries may be a source for a solution if you'd want to hone the drum shaft diameter out to 15mm and special order. Could also consider a pair of 10mm wide cages which I've read will actually fit side-by-side in the available slop, though that may be a slight stretch.

Then there's Li'l Red Barn who claims to have both spur and rim setups available for the 045/056 which include the bearing. Would certainly be the most convenient solution if his bearings are actually to spec. Experience would suggest contacting them first for specific measurements before ordering, though.

Would be interested to know how you make out either way.

Good luck.

Took me a few tries but I found a bearing on eBay $10. Found 2 new brake/guard handles $16 each at Riverside Tool in NJ. Found a used full wrap to replace the stock handle for $38 at Northwoods. So for a total of $264 bucks I got a fully functional saw. Don't make out that good on every "maybe a deal" saw.

Nice job. That handle is a very cool finishing touch. Just keep your fingers crossed with the ignition. They are problematic. If you encounter problems there are several approaches to fixing them if it's a Bosch setup and there is a German company that makes a replacement for the SEM setup (albeit a little pricey) if that's what you have. The SEM is not fixable (at least not to date) and must either be converted to the Bosch setup (including flywheel) or replaced if it goes bad.

Anyway, ya did good there, Frank. Happy cutting with that beast!

I might as well offer a little update since this thread resurfaced. Doesn't look like my friend is interested in selling the 056. Would have been cool to get that big ol beast but hey, can't blame them for wanting to hold on to it.

That's just it, it hasn't been used in over ten years and ran when it was put in the shed. He wants me to see if I can get it going. They just aren't biting on my offer to buy it for 100 bucks or so. Probably won't see much use if I get it running again.

Trade em somethin' lighter, faster, newer? Hell, I dunno...LOL.

I have one in a box I got for $35 that I'm itchin' to clean up and put together. Already know the SEM module is bad and have a Bosch module and flywheel for it along with the proper cap to modify the Bosch setup bypassing the internal capacitor which is the common failure point in those. There's a great thread on AS about it if you ever find the need to modify a Bosch setup.
