Hey guys. First post but I’m jumping right in. Chainsaw bug hit me hard and I’m going in head first. I already have a couple projects I’m working on.
One is a 038. It was given to me in pieces and a few were missing, namely the piston no biggie. So i measure the cylinder and it’s 48mm. A search brings up 50 and 52. Go in deeper and see no mention of 48mm in 038. I got a 48mm piston but is that the right cylinder ? It definitely is a stihl cylinder.

48mm bore is the original 038av, 50 is 038avs (super ) and 52 is 038av magnum.
Not sure why you aren't finding pistons...

Even repair manuals and parts lists, list the minimum is 50mm. That is what is confusing to me.
But thanks for the reply.

Hmm, with a quick google search (stihl 038 av 48mm), I found quite a few references to the existence of 48mm bore 038's...
Apparently stihl no longer makes a replacement piston in that size, nor does meteor.

Here's an aftermarket piston;

And another;
https://sawzillaparts.com/proline-piston-kit-for-stihl-038-48mm-1119-030-2000/

I believe this is an oem one;

You can also directly bolt on a 50mm p&c but the 52mm requires some minor modification.

ya like i said, i found some after i searched specifically for 48mm but i guess my whole thing is the IPL, they only list 50 and 52mm, just thought it was odd and making sure 48 is what it should be/was.

so the 50 just bolts on? i may just go that route, bigger is better right? :)

Seconding what @wcorey mentioned - you can go up to 50mm piston/cyl. or 52mm piston/cyl (displacement of the 038 Magnum ~ 72cc) with some minor modifications. Depending on what you're going to use it for, might be worth the upgrade in size now since you've got the thing apart and piston cylinder kits are relatively affordable. Happy building!

To take an av up to Mag specs would be more of a pain in the buttocks than what it's worth .If you want a Mag get one .Besides that they probably made more magnums than they did AV's .Not to mention it's not that difficult to modify an av if you want a little more zip than stock .
