Planning to go on a little fishing trip to a few area OPE shops and while my main focus is saws from the graveyard, it's conceivable that "bad" cylinders might be available too.

So my question is this: how are Stihl cylinders marked? Are they all marked with their 4-digit model number? 11 digit? Are some simply not marked?

Also, where is a good spot to find a model number on a (mag) case? I know of at least one shop that has saws that are pretty parted out. I'd hate to miss out on a case that was worth picking up, and conversely, parting with cash for one that I'll never really have a need for. I'd rather be able to ID it first.

There will be a 4 digit number cast onto the side of the cylinder that will help to ID what saw series it is for. For example, 1125 will be 034, 034super or 036 and their ms series equivalents
1128 will be for 044, 046 or their ms series equivalents.
Easiest way to tell what saw an 1128 or any other series cylinder fits is to measure the bore.

When looking at crank cases look for the part number. The first 4 digits will also ID them as to what series of saw it is for. There are physical differences with the cases that can be used to ID what saw in the series it is.
For example. A PN of 1125 xxx xxxx with a front chain adjuster will be 034 or 034 super. If it has a side chain adjuster it will be for a 036.
Flippy cap will tell you if it's for the MS series. No flippy cap it's for the 0 series. (Unless it's a 066 or ms660, they all had screw caps)

Hope this helps. I know it sounds a little confusing

The first 2 numbers cast on the flange tell the bore diameter.
For example:

1128 is 044/ms440/046/ms460

The 52 means 52mm bore so we can tell this is a 046/MS 460 cylinder not a 044/MS440.

1st cylinder I ever seen these markings on cylinder. My guess is date and time of production or maybe tested.
