Looks like you got some hogging to do. That AM intake looks a bit narrower too, or is it just the angle of the pic?

Here are pics of the jugs and misc parts. Measuring the intake opening from the base, it is 21/32 on the D jug, and 13/16 on the Big Bore. That is over 1/8" difference. A lot easier to see in real life than the pics show.

Perhaps that is an extra trigger pin, but it looks small for that.

That pin might be a brake band retainer pin

Did not want to trim the piston, but good idea, would work. I combined old school, a little new school, and some Rube and got er done! The trailer makes a solid work bench, I get some fresh air and good light, and it keeps the mess out of the house!

I think I got the intake about were I want it, and did not go through the cylinder, so I'm happy. It will be better than where it was. Also improved the upper transfers just a little bit, and opened the outside of the intake a bit.

I may get ridiculed, but I use what I got and it worked, so I'm happy. It is not perfect, but I wish my cell phone took clearer pics of the work.

So the cylinder is ready, time to build the saw and see how it does!

Good stuff Mike, files can be great for straight port walls, just be careful hitting the plating on the cylinder wall. Maybe a protective layer of tape or something in the cylinder may help should the file touch the plating.

The only ports I enlarged I did from the inside out, and then re did the bevel with a diamond ball.

But I did feel the need to fix the exhaust port today. The inside port looked fine, but the outside was not symmetrical and did not match the gasket.

Knowing that exhaust gasses expand tremendously, I tried to put a little bit of funnel shape in the port, plus enlarging the outside to match the gasket.

Then I installed the piston, Caber Rings, and glued the jug down. We're making progress!

So, I re checked my timing #s on the new case, just to make sure the case is the same and I did not muff anything up.

Ex and Tr stayed exactly the same at 103.5 and 122, respectively, and the new intake # is 72.5.

That may not be a great intake #, but it is a heck of a lot better than 64. We will see how it runs, and maybe I'll do the next one a bit more aggressively (on the intake) to see if it is worth going back into this one.

If my 046 D jug and Hemi 460 jug are 74 + 75 w/o base gasket, they must have been close to that with a base gasket.

If you raised ex to 102, left trans alone and took intake to 75 would it gain?

Very likely, but I don't have any tools to raise the Ex, and I'm going to run it like it is and see what it does.

Likely I will make the Exhaust in the upper 70s on the next one and see what the difference is.

Flywheel (w/.020 advance) and clutch are on the saw, but what a PITA. The flywheel key is .080 while the crank is cut for a .078 key, the little pin for the brake band will not fit through the hole, have to drill it out, the oil gear driver was hitting on the outside and had to be bent in just a bit, and the clutch did not want to go down. Finally installed it (over the oil driver) w/o the bearing in, then inserted the bearing. Not the way I normally do it, but the only way I could get it to work with this saw. So in short Everything just fits real well!!! This darn thing better run well, that's all I can say!

I agree. However, I can always take more off, can't ever put it back! Like I said, I will see how she runs, then make the next one between 75-80 and see how much difference it makes.

If it is significant, I'll take it back down.

Maybe on next saw take a bit off intake skirt with a flat file on flat surface, make sure no burrs on it after. If it responded bad then I’d just get a new piston. I think treemonkey ground on pistons to experiment with gains. Nothing wrong with that in my eyes. Better than buying a new cylinder.

I wanted mid 70s, but was paranoid about taking too much off (my first time doing this). We will be a little more aggressive on the next one now that I know what the result was.

Hey, maybe it will be a real fuel efficient saw!
