Usually when they say something will come between 2 and 8pm, you are lucky if it comes by 8 pm, but not today. At 2:00 while I was in the middle of working on my 046 the packages arrived.

So mostly I just kinda looked things over, but here are my first impressions:

I am not as impressed with the New West Big Bore kits as I was with the Cross ones that came with the 660. Maybe they will work out well and I will be surprised, but the first one I opened had a horrible lower transfer port. The upper edge is very jagged and thin as a knife blade. Will have to see if I can fix it w/o getting into the ring area.

Conversely, the combustion chambers look great. They are D shaped, and look remarkably like my Mahle D Jug.

The other concern I have with the Big Bore jugs (and I would appreciate comments from someone more knowledgeable than me on this) is the intake ports seem much higher than on my Mahle D Jug. They are over 1/8" higher than my Mahle D Jug, and that one opens (w/o base gasket) at 74.

Pipe in folks, am I right to be concerned about an intake opening a good amount above 74??? Isn't high 70s usually optimal???

If you want to see how this Big Bore Piston compares to OEM and Meteor 460 slugs, see my thread "Re Creating a Classic 046".

So then I checked out that standard jug that came with the saw. Not the same problems, but the lower transfers on that need some work also. However, based on measurements from the base, the port timing on the 440 jug seems remarkably similar to the port timing on my Mahle 046 D Jug. IMO, that is not a bad thing! I may have to give one of those jugs a try!

Mike have you ever tried a hyway piston? In my limited experience I was surprised by the casting of my hyway 55mm 390xp piston. Only one small booger on inside that I ground smooth easily. It felt lighter than the meteor 385xp 54mm in the hand... but that’s just a shot in the dark without a scale. Meteor and hyway are trustworthy if you inspect them well imo. I’m ocd so I used oem rings and circlips in my 385/390 build. So far it hasn’t blown up yet... lol

Timing #s

OK, here are the timing #s I came up with (all w/o base gasket):

First the New West Big Bore:

Sqish .030 Ex 103.5 Tr 122 In 64

Now the Huztl 440:

Squish .058 Ex 101.5 Tr 124 In 71.5

I'm disappointed with the Squish # on the 440 and the Intake # on the Big Bore.

Being as the Big Bore cylinder has a very tight combustion chamber, I can live with the .030 squish, but I think I need to try my hand at grinding and lower that intake to the mid 70s, then it should be good to go.

Thoughts/Comments both welcome and appreciated. I've never grinded on a jug before, but I think I can get to the intake with my Electric Sharpener with the Diamond Stone. By comparing it with my D jug, I know about where to bring it.

That intake is terrible. Not doubting you but could you post a pic of in the intake with it set at 64.

Dang, .058 w/o a base gasket? Bravo Hutzl.

So, after getting a good look at these on the saw, what's your heading for dealing with them?

I'll take a pic of it next to the D jug when I take the pic of the other parts. Based on my measurements, and knowing the D jug was 74, that # does not surprise me at all. The intakes on these Big Bores are way too high, you can see it by just looking at them.

I think if I can lower the intake on the Big Bore jugs, that is the easiest way to get decent performance, but I'm just guessing at this point.

Here are pics of the jugs and misc parts. Measuring the intake opening from the base, it is 21/32 on the D jug, and 13/16 on the Big Bore. That is over 1/8" difference. A lot easier to see in real life than the pics show.

Perhaps that is an extra trigger pin, but it looks small for that.
