Bought it years ago brand new and it seems to be getting less and less power. Looking around I haven’t found any threads of rebuilds or swapping to higher output engines. Cleaned carb, cleaned muffler, replaced fuel lines already.

Suggestions?

Have you pulled the arrestor screen in the muffler?

Worn rings?

Since my compression tester pooped out, I can’t verify. I was going to just tear it down and do a general overhaul but if there is a simple engine swap I would explore that option.

Tore it down yesterday afternoon. Piston looks great, plug is a perfect color. I ordered a new compression tester to verify but feels like it has good compression. The muffler is very heavy for its size so I am assuming it has a cat in it which I wouldn’t be surprised if it was clogged or partially clogged. The fact that it seems to be brazed all the way around kind of reinforces that assumption. Tried to peel the crimp back in a similiar fashion as I do on a chainsaw and it was a no go. So, gonna grind it down all the way around and check out the guts then braze it back together.

I also noticed the clutch seemed to be a bit wobbly. Popped it off and the bronze bushing was worn on the screw side. As a temp fix I pressed it out and flipped it around until I can get a new one. Threw some heavy grease inside and put it back together.

We’ll see how it runs when I am done with the muffler.

I had a FS70r, it was the worst. I had a Redmax that lasted 15 years, the Stihl wasn't worth the time, money, or effort to keep it running. I'll never own another Stihl product. The shop I go to now sells Stihl and Husqvarna, they told me they don't recommend Stihl, but they make a lot off them, mostly in repairs
