Why don't you use the rear striping bar?
I thought it was a striping bar but it bolts th the head and adjust the handle tilt. It is only round on the top open on the bottom with a tab on it. It looks strange.

WOW, it sure does. That is really neat, I wonder if its factory? I bet is steady. If you have a john deere model number on it I might be able to find a manual for it if you don't already have one.

It does now that you mention it. Funky.

There is a model tag on the back of the deck I will have to get a picture of it. It says 18 on the top of the deck but I figured that was the cut. The engine is a Briggs made in 1975. Still has points and under flywheel recoil.

Not nearly as old, but still green; I have a JD F925 w/a 3cyl Yanmar diesel. The fuel pump is leaking so i need t remove it and redo the seals at the fuel lines. Air intrusion causes a lot of problems.

I got this one about a year ago, second owner of it. 1975 model 18” cut.View attachment 114848View attachment 114849View attachment 114850
That was a 3hp B&S 92508 engine with 2-9/16" bore and a 1-3/4" stroke. The B&S mowers were 18", 20", and 21". The 21" mower had the 3-1/2 hp 110988 engine or the 110985 engine if it had the electric start option. The mowers offered with a Tecumseh engine were 19" and 21". The 19" had the 3 hp LAV30 Tecumseh engine and the 21" had the 3-1/2 hp LAV35 engine

That's out of my league. How's it going on the air intrusions?

Memories, thanks. I remember the Whirlwind, Guardian, and Grassmaster Toro's fondly. I got a Toro 18" Sportlawn reel mower when I turned 12, it sure beat the push mower by a damn site. Mowing time was cut over 75%.

I had a Sears brand push reel mower when I was a kid. It cut quite nice, I used it on the flat parts of the yard with really fine grass. They are an excellent choice for an urban dweller with a postage stamp size yard.

Actually, mine was gray (now mostly rust) and it's in my mom's barn. I got the Tecumseh un-powered Lawn Girl out today to get it going for the year. Tecumsehs don't like to start easily the first time of the season, they like to flood or starve. I usually give them a little help with brake cleaner, seems like running on brake cleaner for a minute or so gets everything loosened up and working properly. I 'spose this is the International Harvester way to start, which makes sense given that LB used to sell mowers to them.

Got around to messing with a somewhat incomplete (missing one wheel, deadman handle, shroud decals) Murray M20300 20" push mower I got for cheap awhile back. It starts and runs ok but not very smooth, probably has fossilized gas in it. It's a 2016 model with B&S OHV engine, 300E I think. In any event it is identical to the one shown on the Walmart website. Anyhow, I go to looking for the model-type-code info and it is nowhere to be found. According to the Briggs site, this info should be located on a metal plate between the air filter housing and valve cover. The plate is there but completely blank and smooth, no stamping, printing, or indication that a sticker was ever there. Any ideas on how I can identify this engine? Best as I can tell, it is an 08P502 series. I sent B&S an e-mail about it, hopefully they will respond soon.
