I guess the saw would be just fine.........but would your Harley even make it to collect??

Sorry man, couldn't resist that one!

Have we forgotten that I originally picked up this Harley on the other side of Nottingham? The first day I had this bike, I drove it 6 hours across 3 countries if Wales is to be taken seriously. ;)

Of course Wales is to be taken seriously!! If only for the prolific magic mushroom cultivation from the Black Mountains that could be had when they were legal........

:crazylick:

Anyway, you've just stitched yourself up. In that case, you could easy make it to mine to test drive the 064. Seeing as it's you I'll even save you a 4" thick limb of Conifer Leylandii to do some test cuts on.

If I didn't have to fly I would come by and pick it up.

Trade you a 10mm 044 that will eventually need a new piston for that 064 ;)

Bringing this good thread back.

I must have a newer 10mm case. The 12mm crank fits, with .008 clearance off of the rod end and .020 off the weights.

The case is pretty nice, it’s just been soaking in hot purple power for 5 days. The paint starts to peel.

Here is a 10mm crank, then a 10mm vs a 12mm

Thanks

I know it’s 10mm by the casting by the muffler and the 10mm crank and piston.

I’m wondering if anyone knows where the cutoff came for the 10mm “large case” that @huskihl points out above.

The 12mm Crank fits perfect in this case. I plan on sanding the lower rod, as you suggested, for a bit more clearance. I’m not sure how thick powder coating is.

That’s a 10mm case

Do you know what the starting SN’s for the 044’s were?

Pretty sure my buddy was pointed towards the 038M for stumping when the 044 was new because of the 10mm crank weakness. Over time, it doesn’t seem like many failed.

The m4/m5 recoil screw change may be the change period. Not sure. Some guys mention the rod hitting. Some mention the counterweight hitting.

The serial numbers are never a true black and white target, just an approximate designation. I've seen factory 12mm wrist pin saws with earlier serial numbers and factory 10mm wrist pin saws with later serial numbers.

There were a lot of failures with the 10mm wrist pin cranks here, so much so that Stihl was motivated to phase out the 10mm wrist pin crank. A lot of it had to do with the maintenance the saws received. Stihl issued a letter
explaining the change and then a service bulletin soon after. One of the logging companies I worked for stopped using 044s on the landings because of it.
