The add doesn't say about what ring comes with the kit. I'm converting a 261 and want to go with the best. Any other suggestions?

Thanks. that's good news. My ''plan'' is of coarse the piston. Clean up all the ports, widen and lower the exhaust probly 1mm and the intake the opposite . Open the muffler. Rebuild the carb. Timing advance. Maybe not the perfect course of action but I hope I'm gaining. Any advice?

Thanks. I will. I'm only going for a strong firewood saw . I'll save the degree wheel and perfection when I accumulate all the 044 part I need.

I think you have this backwards?

Unless you are talking about somehow using a 262xp piston in a Stihl ms261?? But I doubt it as the ms261 is considerably smaller in displacement...

261 was the detuned version of the 262xp. Dished piston. Kinda like a 350-353.

Thanks man. We all get to tossing model numbers around and leave off "XP" or "MS" or even the brand. Sometimes you have examples of models numbers shared by two manufacturers.. Didn't really figure it was a hybrid but with some of the hybrids Iv'e seen some of these guys in here do, ya never can tell! LOL!

Doesn’t help that there’s many versions over the years of many models.

Sorry for not being specific. However.. Yes. What has been said about the 261/262xp differences is correct. Up to a flat top piston and open the muffler and its supposed to be basically the same. I'd like a step or two further with this build.

No need to apologize neighbor, that was just me rethinking my post suggesting you had your intent for the intake and exhaust ports backwards. I started wondering if you were building a hybrid of some sort and needed to modify the port in that way to run a piston from a different model saw. You know, could almost taste my own foot there for a second. :)

But yes, generally when you want to make some gains in power, you do some type of compression mod, IE: BG delete at the basic level, or cut base and squish at the more advanced level, then make your changes to port timing and size. Most times exhaust is raised to a desired point and widened, then transfers raised to achieve desired blowdown, then intake floor lowered to increase intake duration and advance timing.

I don't want to turn your thread into a porting theory thread though. Just wanted to help you out and don't want to see you ruin a 262 cylinder by free-porting it, which can happen if you lower the exhaust port too far.

Thank you for correcting my blonde moment. And you are very helpful in pointing out my mistake, I appreciate that. My meaning was a little off the top, a little off the bottom some blending, etc.. Should hopefully make this saw right were it should be. Just a strong dependable work saw
