Ok, Now I am wondering is this a common damage point on my MS461? What causes this damage? chain coming off or throwing saw in truck? or just over time vibration and weak design? Should I make a similar bracket or buy one to protect that area so it does not break? I actually already have the customchainsaw tank guard installed. I would rather protect now to keep from breaking later. I looked at the Stainless one maulhead posted about. I wonder do the holes line up with a good screw location?

I do not know what happened to my 046 to break it as the saw was an abused basket case when I picked it up, initially for parts. I have seen and owned several other MS460 and 046 saws with the same broken mount within the last two or three years, and have split and replaced the halves. Since splitting the cases is somewhat time consuming, I thought about welding some buildup on it and re-contouring it. That really isn't feasible nor fast so I would not consider it unless I had the pieces to weld back in. Not to mention the mag. filler is about $90/lb from my "local" supplier.
As far as screw locations, there are not a lot of good open spots on the 046 between the mount that the tank slides into, the retainer for the chain brake, and the cast strength ribs to tap for a screw. I tapped M4 X 0.7 because I had some short, flat-head screws that size and I wanted a fairly fine pitch to give me the most threads in the case. I cannot really speak to the locations of the ones on Ebay, but I will recommend if you make one, use slightly thinner material than I did, simply because it was difficult to get the bends and radius to match.

While talking about repairs, here is a magnesium repair on the rear handle of an Stihl 041 AV.
I did not think to take a "before" picture, but the ear was broken free, not missing. Welding magnesium is not something I have a lot of experience with so do not be fooled by the "after" picture as it took a lot of carbide bur, hand filing, and sanding to get it to look presentable.

Looks good to me JohnnySef, If I get some time one day I may try to improve mine a little, I am thinking maybe a cap like on the tank side, just to protect that area a little bit. thanks for posting pictures of your mag repair.
