Thank you all again for all your support. Mom got discharged today. They can not do any more for her at the hospital. She is going to need a lot of help and it is going to be a long road. We are trying to figure out how to get some in home healthcare. There seems to be a hundred hoops to jump through to even get the ins. To consider to cover any of it. Lots to try and wade through that is for sure. Our current elderly healthcare is pathetic in many ways and I don't see how anyone can make sense of all of it to get the most out of it. It is like they make it so out of reach to make you just give up instead of studying, and spending countless hours to just get the help needed. I truly feel for anyone that would have to face these challenges on their own. Especially in any condition less then perfect.
Medicare-Medicaid-disability a lawyer can get you through most of those hoops I believe.
It is I believe most often difficult finding honest, quality home health care workers for 24 hour care ,but I believe it can be done.
My parents been through it, siblings disagreements made things hard to work.
Prayers sent in the name of Jesus Christ for souls, minds, health and wealth .

Praying for everyone going through these difficulties.

My Grandfather had Cancer for ten years, my Grandmother and us as a family cared for him until the last four months, then we had to get in home full time care. I do not know what the cost was but I know it was outrageous. He paid for everything out of pocket, the entire time. He worked for Colonial Bakery for 41 years, his entire working life after the Navy. When he retired part of his package was he and my Grandmother were supposed to have full insurance for the rest of their lives. Not too long after he got sick they got a letter, the company that Colonial had their health insurance with was no longer going to cover anyone in the State of Georgia, and just like that they were both dropped and there wasn't a single thing they could do about it. As he had a pre existing condition no one would give him coverage and Medicare is a total joke. So he paid out of pocket, for ten years, 3.5 Million (he was an account executive with Colonial, over some very large accounts) by the time it was all over.

Maybe some of our medical professionals can help shed some light on how to maneuver the insurance?

unfortunately, getting bled dry is all too common. seems like 3.5million is a number an attorney would love to take a stab at though....just dunno what actual recourse you'd have.

insurance will be the downfall of this country, not our salvation like everyone seems to tout

Boy are we on the same page with that one!!! The politicians and insurance companies are taking us for an expensive ride.

From a recent bill my wife got:

Charge $496.90 Ins Payment $22.50
Charge $593.00 Ins Payment $31.00 Co Pay $20.00

So if you don't have medical insurance, and you are not indigent, you are on the hook for the full amount!

How do we let medical providers and insurance companies get away with this scam??? Disgraceful!

they want $90k a year for dental school at NYU. .... thats $360k total AFTER COLLEGE.....

how many fillings do I need to do to make up for that?

the math just isn't adding up. going to school just isn't paying off. it just isn't.

the real scam is in the eduation we are all paying infinite amounts for.

just as an interesting illustration of what we all truly value...

next time anyone's car needs a brake job, and the mechanic quotes you ....say.... $500 bux.... make sure to ask him "does my insurance cover that?" and see what happens

Matt, I'm not blaming doctors and dentists, but how many doctors are still independent? Medical Malpractice Ins is another catastrophe.

The billings I quoted are for lab tests.

Unfortunately, if you just wanted to go to your local doc and negotiate a fair price, the insurance companies won't allow it. Their reimbursement is based on a much higher (non negotiable) price to everyone else. How is this legal in America???

And don't get me started on college tuition ... in all fields!!!

And that is the problem with insurance, you only ask "am I covered", not "what does it cost", and "do I really need it".

@drf256 is still independent :)

Still beholden to insurance companies though. ....

That is driven by Americans demanding medical care as a right...and a medical association that has sold out since the 60s. Such is life. No longer are we paying doctors with chickens and zucchini

I want to emphasize that it was not Colonial that did this (Or Anheuser Busch, their parent company at the time) it was the insurance company.

Hey, we had an insurance company here in CT .... they did very well for themselves, started brandy new around 2012? 2013? they had too many healthy patients, and the government slapped them with a fine ...MILLIONS ...to help "even things out" .... so they went under.

I do see what your saying it's just the fact that it was done. That's a shame because people rely on stuff like that. Heck paid health insurance for the rest of your life especially if it's a really good one is almost better than a fat pension!
