Kinda old thread I happened to find.
Liberty Civil defense.. 9mm,50 grns,2000fps.. penetrates barriers, expands when soft tissue is met.

I carry .45acp in XD's or 1911. Im old school, besides just old.
Liberty load is 78 grns @ 1900 fps.
And very,very accurate.

How's this for old school? My little S&W 637 snubnose .38 Special is the gun I carry the most. No laser or light, just miniscule fixed sights. She eats a 148 grain Lyman full wadcutter over 3.1 grains Bullseye and a Federal primer. It clocks a very consistent 712 FPS and is very accurate and easy to shoot. Sedate wadcutters actually penetrate quite well, and the big flat point with sharp shoulders can do some damage.

I carry a S&W 638 with either a 135 jhp at 950fps or a 148gr plated full wad cutter at 800fps. I feel comfortable carrying either load.

I prefer .45, I shoot the damn things better. However the advancement of ammo 2day has proven time and time again that the 9mm is equal to a .45 in stopping power. +P+ LOADS RULE!
i WOULDNT HAVE A SW.40 SHOVED UP MY KAZOO. ! To much bark-bite-and flame out the muzzle for nitetime self defense.
If I need a badazz hombre, well colt delta 10mm gets the nod....

124 grain Speer Gold Dot. +P if the weapon is rated for it. I've never had a problem with it in any caliber/pistol I own. It's what we are issued at my agency and we have done a lot of testing with it against glass, clothing, and sheet metal.
Same for me, but I usually go for the 147gr option. If I carry 9mm it's a G17, And it does well with them

Most "altercations" with a handgun is at 21' or less. Grouping into a paint can cap is optimum.

Placement of center of mass is critical to stay alive, placement of tight inches is critical in a hostage situation. Our world is nuts and getting worse. Practice makes perfect.

I have the 147 grain in my 9mm. 16 of them should work. I prefer the 16 over the 8 in 45.

Reason Feds and State changing from .40 to 9 was also quicker back on target after repeated shots and more accurate shots over and over.
I was a believer after going through the course and seen it for my self.
147gr all the way 9mm for me

The .40 can be an excellent cartridge if the stoopid ammo companies would quit trying to hot rod it. I have a Glock 22 which is comprised entirely of used parts scrounged up on Ebay and Gunbroker. Slide from one gun, frame from another, used LWD barrel, and small parts from my personal gun junkyard. I feed this Glockenstein the Lee 401-175-TC with 4.1 grains Bullseye and a CCI or Remington primer. She clocks a very consistent 900 fps with excellent accuracy, perfect function, and shells only land about 3 feet away. So, in essence I have a 15 shot .44 Special that is as easy to shoot as my Browning Hi-Power 9mm and would have no trouble putting the smack down on anything in the Bluegrass within pistol range.

I wouldn't use factory .40 S&W ammo if it was free. Way too much muzzle jump and noise, and most of it isn't much faster than my own reloads.

Maybe a bit more time on the range would be in order.
I know and shoot with a lot of LE guys. Some are excellent shooters but the vast majority can't shoot for chit.

A few years ago, we had a couples wedding shower for some friends. Both were cops. Almost everyone who showed up was LE. The guys went to my backyard range and the girls went in the house. Eventually, the girls came outside. My wife commented on the piss poor group one of the guys had just shot. He made a statement about those being "pretty strong words coming from a girl."
She didn't say a word, turned and walked into the house. He was afraid he'd hurt her feelings. My best friends wife, said nope, she's going to get her gun.
My wife returned with her G19. Her first shot hit the groin area of a B-27 silhouette at 15yds. The guy commented on it being way low. She put 14 more rounds in a nice tight group around the first, turned and walked back into the house, without saying a word. The smile didn't leave my face for hours.
I realize that the story isn't germane to the conversation but thinking about it made me smile and I thought I'd share.

Not a target shooter here. ;)

Put dummy's in your mags where you dont know where they are ( instructor then takes mags to insure you dont get yours back). Start shooting courses.
Shoot under stress and find out where you really are. ;)

I Love It!!
My wife's a retired Army vet, 100% lady, excellent mom, and spirit-filled, yet she has no fear of conflict or emptying a mag/clip, and is as accurate as Marshall Matt Dillion/Gunsmoke!!
I'm blessed to have her and wouldn't swap her for the world.:beautiful:
