So now that I’m getting some opinions from people that know a lot more than I do, maybe it isn’t worth the work and hassle. I’m sure with enough work I can make it run but will it be an embarrassment when run against a hybrid someone built. One thing I know that will be some work is building the exhaust because I’ll need to do that from scratch. Need to think on this one and maybe when I get a spare case for a 044 and have more experience I’ll revisit it. I have all the parts except the piston.

The 038 mag is a 52mm jug. 038 Super is 50mm which is the same as an 044.

The 038 series have a shorter stroke than the 044/6

I’m not sure it’s worth the extra work if an 046 Jug ain’t that hard to put on and is more geometrically there already.

Now, adding a 461 jug. THAT would be exciting.
Have I got a winter 44/46BB project for you, Doc.!

A 461 jug has a different foot print, I don't think it will fit. If it did fit, you would need to modify the "bottom feed" of the lower transfer to be a side feed. I think you would also need to seal the bottom feed port. Won't say it can't be done, but I don't think it would be worth it.

461s may have more torque stock, but I think that ported 460s run right with them. Mine (ported by Dr Al) has lots of torque.

Ok guys,

Another 44/46 hybrid ask. What's the deal with fitting the shroud / jug cover or am I just being plain stupid? Basically the new shroud which is the oem stihl 044 one (and the old beat up one) don't seem to fit too good over the jug. I didn't try that hard, since I've had a real busy evening here with loads of other stuff, but thought I'd give it a try before I post up any piccies.

The ignition side seems basically alright:

It seems to foul probably on the top and maybe around the o/p side:

2017-11-08 17.40.32.jpg

I'm hoping that I can get by be cutting away some of the underside of the cover, e.g.

What do people reckon? The section near the black or the green arrow or whatever......

If it has to be more fin grinding then fair enough, just wish I'd done it earlier.

Help!!

(Apologies if I really am just being stupid, and the stock 044 all fits fine, with no cutting, it's just that I was kind of in more of a rush than usual tonight....arrgghhh!....it's tea time gotta go!)

Thanks, mate. Kinda intrigued to figure out what the deal is with the shroud. Anyway that's for another day, I'm putting my feet up for today ;)

Thanks Pal,

The first pic you uploaded looks really drastic, in the level of cutting needed. Unless I'm picturing it wrong (sorry I'm at the day job now). Can you send any more piccies? e.g. taken from above and around the sides when fitted on a saw?

I've got the old shroud that come with the saw, but it's missing a chunk at the back of the ign side, so it aint that representative. I can still play with this one until I take plunge and butcher my new one I guess...

:)

Agreed.i was only stating it cuz i had heard its been done with one or other but 046 460 seems the best and easiest plus easier to find.thats why im goin 044 046 hybrid as i speak.thanx doc one day i need to send you one mine to port.

The main rib that runs side to side on cover just above the bolt hole is probably 3/4 high or a little more. It needs to be cut down to about 1/4” high to clear the fins on the o46 jug. If your broke cover fits it’s probably off an 046 flip them upside down next to each other and you should be able to see what I’m talking about. I can get some pics later of the stiffening rib that needs to get cut.

Thanks Lehman,

I don't think the old broke one fits either - it's genuine 044. I'll give it a wash first (tonight) - since it's filthy, then I'll perhaps try it later on. Thanks again. Some pics would be great if poss.

I'm away from home right now, but I'm kinda getting the drift of what you are saying.

Cut the old cracked one first so you can see what the minimum you can cut off and still clear the fins. Then do the new one. But yes I’ll give you picks of my hybrid cover and show you an 046 cover. If it’s an oem 044 cover it won’t fit over a 046 jug without cutting

It's obvious where it needs cut. Look at cfb's 1st pic. Looking at the cover from the muffler end, there's a strip that sticks down a half inch or so right about where the muffler heat shield goes. Trim that strip down so it only sticks down about 1/4".

Sorry you're right (sorry @Canadian farm boy for misunderstanding your first pic).

When I first saw the pics it was 5.30 am UK time, and I'd just got in at work (computer based work), and was kinda really hyped and I mistook the pictures.

Am back home now (4pm ish) and I can see what you all mean....

Sorry I'm so stupid/impulsive at times....... :(

I'll have a play later on...thanks for everyone's help and patience!
