The .35 Remington is a force to be reckoned with. The .44 intrigues me, but I think that the old .45-70 in the right weapon would be more flexible as a reloader. I'm actually looking at rebarreling a Czech/Brno VZ-24 Mauser K98 that I have from 8x57mm (a wonderful cartridge, but a semi-eroded throat) to .338-06. I like the idea of a .338 WM but loath the concept of a belted cartridge. The other interesting prospect that I'm thinking of is a .338-375 Ruger... No belt and a wide powder column.

I may have been not far away from you recently. I had to go to Robins AFB for some conferences 2 weeks ago. Flew into ATL and drove south. Pretty country!
Yep...If you were at Robins, you were literally within blocks of me on the flighline.

Nice! I toured AFRC HQ building, ISEC ad the "School House" past the golf course. I was surprised though at how large the chow hall/DFAC is.

It's a fine round...the Marlin 336 chambered in .35, with 200 gr loads does the same effect. Great brush gun and will kill a deer all day long out to 200 yards. I've killed more deer with my .35 than all my long 400-yd plus guns combined. No different than the Winchester model 94...killed more deer than all combined on the planet shooting a .30-.30.

Very good deer guns. This is a new 30-30 that shoots the 160 gr. flex tip. Not new 6 years old now.

I sold my newer marlin 30-30 with micro groove and tapped for scope. When I inherited my grandpas old marlin 30-30 deer brush gun he used in southern KY.

This older marlin is before micro grooves and had normal rifling and not tapped for scope.

I also got handed down a 1914 single shot he got for his 16th birthday. Plus some others a .22 score or targetmaster. Cant remember which one it was as I have had a few of those too.

Being first grandson I got my picks of multiples.

I dug up info and saved in the shooting thread on my site on the older 30-30. Would have to look for it to tell anymore.

I really like Winchester and Savage lever guns, but Marlin has made a very good product. The late model ones have issues, especially the Remington ones... I also prefer the older, non-microgroove with lead, plus they have much more slender stocks which I find much more ergonomic and comfortable. I have pretty big hands, but the newer models all feel like a baseball bat to me. I definitely prefer the 92 and 94 Winchesters to the 336 and 94 Marlins. A buddy has a Stainless 336 in .30-30 and it's a darn fine shooter, just not my cup-o-Joe.

Now, if an 1886 Winchester or 99 Savage fell in my lap, I wouldn't protest too much!

I had a Marlin 94 45/70 that was made pre Remington. It was a fun rifle to shoot.

I owned it for a year and one day a guy called me who was looking for one and he got my number from a buddy at the gun shop.

I couldn't turn down his trade when he offered me a brand new Springfield TRP straight up.

I have a Marlin 39a . Finest lever action .22 ever. Shoots right with the Ruger 77/22 bolt. For years I wondered what the fuss was all about. Bought one. All those gun writers were right.

Found a few 35s for sale....headed to a gun show Saturday hopefully I can find something cheaper than 500-550. Most are on Gunbroker and include a scope so really it is not to bad of a deal

Strange how prices rose since I bought a levergun.

I remember when looking for my 444SS I had more than a few Winchester 444s pop up and were cheaper than some Marlins.

444 Outfitters have also become pretty steep in price.

Sent from my non internal combustion device.

Hell, just about anything of quality has gone up in price a lot. A lot of people hate on Taurus for semi-copying S&W and for using MIM manufacturing (like Ruger) but when I bought my model 608 (8-shot .357) it felt good and the price was a good $350 or more cheaper than a S&W 686. 200+ yard shots on a 1.5'w x 5.5' tall steel pipe is pretty doable free-hand. That freaks out those who've never seen a revolver shot at distance... Now, I do intend to buy either a 5-6" 686 or a 5-6" GP100 (and then do an action job) to have a nice revolver, but my Taurus has been carried countless miles on foot and horse around friends ranches, has the "patina" to prove it, and will not be inherited before I'm either gone, or physically/mentally unsound to use it any longer. Now I did help Dad buy a used (98% condition) 6" blued Python, as he always wanted one since they were invented, but had never had the $$$ to justify it. Watching Him take possession of that weapon with a kid in a candy store look was worth the trade of a good revolver of mine was definitely worth it. He's helped me more through the years than I have a right to and been a better dad to many of my friends, than their own fathers were/are. It wasn't much, but it was something.

On a different note, if a person wasn't quite up to spending the money on a Dillon (unless I find a nice used one in my budget) what would be the best of the alternative brands in a progressive press?

I have a Hornady LNL that I'm happy with that said my brother in law has a Dillon 650 and he's happy with. I do think the Dillon overall is a better press. But you pay$$$

My experience with reloading is you can't just set it up and pull the lever you have to operate the press.
It's like anything else in life there's good operators and bad operators.

If you want to go cheap and still be able to load moderate volume then the Lee 4 hole classic Turret is a nice option.

It's auto indexing, but only one shell at a time. It's about half the speed as what I can do with my 550.

I loaded a lot of ammo on that turret press before I got my Dillon.

Anyone shoot remington 11-87. Iv googled them and they have horible reveiws.
Mine the action is staying open after shoot and just push action close button and good to go till next time.
Anyone know muxh about this problem

The shell in the magazine may not be coming back hard enough to trip the carrier release. Assuming the trigger group and action are clean and the magazine tube and "O" ring are clean and in good shape, pull the magazine spring (wear safety glasses) and give it a stretch. That may do it. They can become weak over time. It won't hurt.

i was wonderng about the spring being weak. I cleaned the action all out. Wasnt really dirty. Put a new o ring on. Havnt had time to try it yet.
May stretch the sprinng a bit too.

I used to stretch the spring in my old pellet gun when i was a kid to get more power lol.

I've had a few go weak over the years. Very easy to trace in the pumps as you can beat the shell coming out of the magazine and they jam. I used to think I was short stroking the slide but a spring stretch fixed them.
A really good trap shooter I used to shoot with, AA -27-AA, used his Model 12 for doubles and he stretched the spring so far that if you hit the slide lock button, the bolt would open and kick the shell out.

I liked the Remington pumps and autos but found the autos a little muzzle heavy after shooting model 12's for quite awhile.

The auto I liked the best was the Beretta 302. The grip and swing was very similar to a Model 12. I never owned one but a friend of mine bought a case of them (30) and he used to loan me one. I bought a Beretta A303 which points almost as well for me and has screw in chokes. The 1100's and 11-87's used to freeze up after a lot of shells when we used to shoot divers on Lake Ontario in Dec. Sometimes the temps would be worse than -20. The Beretta never did.
I can't say anything bad about any of them. People should shoot what works best for them within what they can afford..

My neighbor, the one I got the 2nd Extrema from, has a Beretta Silver Mallard. Not sure of the "A" #, but she is a thing of flawless beauty
