I had a few Safety Kleen like this. $100-$150 used. When I sold off one, I was lucky to get $50 for it. Use mineral spirits as solvent. Look on Craigslist.View attachment 3648
I just replaced my parts washer. I found this on CL. It distills and recycles the solvent.

It's kinda neat. Push a button and 4 hours later the solvent is crystal clear clean. Unscrew the plug in the front and clean out the muck.

I really should try plumbing in a filter like on the parts washer a few posts back.

Solvent ain't cheap

I bought my "20 gallon" unit at Menards a few years back, it actually requires around 10 or 11 gallons of solvent; I use mineral spirits. I bought a spare pump with the unit but haven't needed it in several years now.

The flow through brush hose failed and I haven't bothered to replace it yet. I clean it out about once a years, take the old dirty solvent to my local auto repair shop and dump it in his waste oil tank.

You have to watch those used safety kleen units .Safety Kleen recycled the solvent but didn't do a real good job of filtering some of the toxic stuff out .There were people at work that got a reaction to the use of those machines .

I had an old unit from a tranny shop I gave away .A 5 gallon bucket full of kerosine and a parts brush is good enough for me .An old dishwasher would work for water .For heavens sake don't use the one in the kitchen .With the lady of the house that would be as popular as a turd in a punch bowl .Pity the fool .

Great thread. My unit sat over the winter with a water/purple power solution and froze. It crack the pump. Now I need to get a new one.

Can anyone recommend a small-sized parts washer that uses organic solvents instead of water-based detergents for my shop? Currently, I use an oil change pan along with gasoline to wash parts. Not the safest way, but it's fast at getting the oily woodchip gunk off the parts. I also have a small parts washer that can only use water-based detergents, but it's too slow for the heavy, oily gunk.

That what professional automotive shops use. The stoddard solvent is basically mineral spirits. Blow off with compressed air and the residual will evaporate fairly quick. The really nasty stuff I scrape with a pick and them put in a spray wash cabinet. It's like a giant dishwasher, recycles the heated water/detergent solution.

I have a HF ultrasonic cleaner. It's good for small stuff but not hardly big enough for an entire clutch cover to be submerged.
Never likes the solvent based cleaners because of the fire hazard and reaction with my skin
Really liking the idea of the dish washer. Find a cheap one on CL and plumb it in the shop. Put some water based degreaser in the soap dispenser and in 30 min, an entire cleaned saw. Obviously it would work that good for carbs and small parts, but that's what the ultra sonic is for.

Excellent idea. I have a pray wash cabinet, pretty much the same thing as a dishwasher. If I didn't already have this, I would set a dishwasher on a tank to elevate it and re-use the detergent solution.

Does anyone use diesel fuel for cleaning rather than kerosene or gasoline?

Diesel fuel has a very low flash point compared to kero, gas, mineral spirits, naphtha, etc. tossing ideas around in my head for setting up cleaning station in my new shop.

I've also seen a guy using antifreeze in his US unit to clean his small carbs. Thoughts on that approach?

Trying to eliminate the risk of a conflagration reducing my shop to ashes.

I haven't tried a dishwasher on equipment but I do remember the time I put my mother's cast iron skillets in her new one and tried the pot scrubber mode. They came so clean that they were rusting because I drier heat mode too. She felt kicking my you know what. I was instructed never ever do that again.

I for one am trying to avoid very hazardous cleaning fluids which why I general use just soap and water. Now I do clean a little 2 cycle mix using an engine cleaning wand seems to use a lot less gas though I must make sure no one is around when using it, just don't want a flash fire; definitely doing it outside. Here lately I have just started using 40-50 C hot soapy water under 80-100 psi to wash off the excess grease and dirt.

As for antifreeze to clean carburetors never heard of it besides my UC does an excellent job on cleaning them though it may take up to three 30 minute cycles on some the larger two barrel carburetor that are extremely clogged.
