I found this 2186 locally that seller was told that it scored a piston or a bearing failed.

When I took it apart I found the connecting rod bearing on the crankshaft failed. I located a replacement crank and ordered up the bearings, seals and gaskets to rebuild.

Today I was cleaning up parts and discovered damage to the piston.

It looks like when the rod bearing failed it side loaded the connecting rod against the pin boss of the piston. it measures aprox. .023 inch.

What is your guys opinion on using the piston pictured above? Or should I quit being a tightwad and order a replacement meteor? Anyone know what an OEM husqvarna 385 piston costs?

I’d get a meteor from ccc. I think when I checked at the dealer the complete top end wasn’t much more than a piston.

I found a listing online showing a husqvarna piston kit for $119. Does anyone have experience with NWP pistons?

If your oem cylinder is still good, I’d stick with that. Hiway and meteor pistons seem good so far. If you need a cylinder, post an ad for a used oem rather than AM. Aftermarket cylinders are sketchy from batch to batch.

The cylinder somehow managed to survive the bearing failure without a scratch. It appeared to be a low hour saw therefor my plan was to reassemble with the used piston and rings until I noticed the pin boss damage. The crank bearings are being replaced due to the grit from the rod bearing. New piston it is.

Waiting on a bearing. Just read in the dumpster fire thread that an upgraded crankshaft is available. Wonder if something should b done to replacement crank to prevent repeat failure?

If it’s going to be run 40 hours a week, that’s one thing. If it was my own for occasional firewood use, I’d run what you have and at a heavier oil ratio and it’ll be fine

Have you bought your parts yet @Pincher ? I just saw mention in another thread of a new 390 short block with an updated crank with the cost being in the area of a new p/c. I don't know about you but I'm not about rattle canning some red or black over that orange.
