Have you done a compression test?
Yup, thankfully these have normal 14mm plug threads, and it's read between 155 and 160 over several tests. Decomp is plugged. Feels good when starting.

I had the cylinder off to check out the piston, which has time on it but the skirt measured ok, and ring gap was still reasonable. Forgot to take photos, but below are port shots.

Thanks for any hints, I'm not an expert with the modern Stihls. This one couldn't be too old, has the newer 100362B Zama. Serial # wasn't registered by whatever dealer sold it, but it wasn't used to cut wood. Never had oil in the tank, dirty with some kind of rock/masonry dust, spike and catcher missing, no sprocket. Coworker inherited it with lots of other half-running equipment from a relative's business in California.

Sorry no pics but a 5.7 GM out of an Isuzu NPR, talk about rode hard and put up wet! When I say this thing was nasty I tore down a 1967 vintage 390 FE that had been run on nothing but Quaker State from day one that wasn't MUCH worse, sheesh!!!

One of my favorite engines right there, had both 67 and 68 Mustangs with 390s. The 68 got an aggressive cam, and was my fastest car ever.

And, you could beat the heck out of them all day long, and they just kept running!

Also learned to drive on my Mom's 65 Country Squire with a 390. I raced a 454 Vette with it (when they first came out) on the Bronx River Parkway in White Plains. He could not drive it and fish tailed in every turn, and I put distance between us each time he did it. After a couple of miles my bias ply tires got so hot and greasy I almost slid through the red light!

441 moronic troubleshooting. View attachment 205520I have a love hate relationship with this saw. Lol
It's easier to just straight up hate them, light them on fire, then throw the cremains in the muhfuckin river. Troubleshooting problem solved.

The 390 Thunderbird Engine was available in full size Fords from the early 60s. In 66, you could get the 390 GT engine in either a Mustang GT or Fairlane GT (and the Mercury equivalents).

Ford even offered a solid lifter cam 390 rated at 375 Hp, and a 3 duce version at 401 Hp. 406's (428 block, 390 crank) were also offered in limited quantity). Mercury also offered a 410 (428 crank, 390 block) in some of it's cars.

In 1968, a few year end Mustang GTs had the R code 428 CJ (I had one) and Ford won the NHRA Winter Nationals with that car that year. They are very rare, had the Drag Pack option (mine had 4:30 gears) and engine oil coolers. (About 2,200 made, few survived).

A handful of Mercury Cougars were made with Hydraulic cam (the block had to be drilled) 427s before they also went to 428. No Mustang or Mustang GT-500 Shelby's were ever made with the 427 Ford engine (other than experimental cars). The 427 Ford Engine made a few 66 and 67 AC Cobra's legendary.

390 GT motors were actually VG motors, that were handicapped by horrible exhaust manifolds and a transverse muffler. 390 motors were far more durable than 428s due to being internally balanced (428s are external) and having a shorter stroke, the same stoke is used in 390, 406 and 427.

My 68 390 GT was an absolute animal, in one of the lightest cars that could hold a big block. I NEVER lost a race with it, and I raced EVERYONE. It had an aggressive cam, 800 double pumper Holley, Hooker Headers (and mufflers), TRW double roller timing chain, Ford Steel Shim head gaskets (increased compression 1/2 point), Mallory Photo Cell electronic ignition and a HD oil pump.

I nearly did that to it this summer and took a break from it out of frustration. Funny enough the owner is having me fix up a non-moronic 441 and guess what. Not a single issue with bogging or throttle response. I tell it how I want it to run with a little orange screwdriver. Lol

I used to have a non M Tronic 441, no issues at all! Also, I believe it may have been lighter than the M Tron units.
