Coal stove repair question.

I have this little parlor stove that I use in my shop. I’ve noticed that the material used on the sides is starting to flake off and I’d like to repair it.

So my question is what material should I use?

I’ve been thinking about rolling the new side piece out of some stainless steel.

You going to be able to weld stainless to cast iron? Looks like the front frame work is bolted on.

I imagine the body was double the thickness of a 55gal drum. May not hurt to install a heat shield inside to preserve the body. My recerculator had metal heat shields inside til they burnt out. I lined the complete fire box sides half way up like the steel ones were with fire bricks to keep from burning out the sides. That was 8 years ago and still working well.

It is actually all furnace bolted together, so I wouldn’t have to weld it.

The body without that coating is maybe a hair thicker then a 55gal drum. I’ve thought about lining the inside, but this thing is small already..
Your not supposed to let the coals get has high has the tin, but over X years is showing it’s age.

I guess I didn’t say that I already tried furnace cement. Can’t say I did any special prep work, but it didn’t stick.

It’s coated with something that reminds you of furnace cement, so maybe.

Cut the fire bricks and make them half thickness, still hold direct flames off of the metal.

With the right welding rod you can weld cast to stainless or vice versa.

Stainless steel sheets, bolt them on to body sections that are still healthy and thick, use stainless steel bolts, shims and nuts to make it look nicer.

I have fixed my cast iron fireplace with stainless steel reinforcements after it cracked on multiple places having been pushed to orange glow hotness - it started cracking as it started cooling down.
The fix looks quite nice too.

Finally got around to tinkering with the stove.
Had to drill out a few screws in the process.

Found a nice 1/8” sheet of stainless. I can’t roll anything that thick so I’m going to go see a friend.

So only the front was cast iron while the rest was steel?

That stove will look sweet with that stainless steel sheet!
