Been thinking about gifting myself a new .22 rifle lately and narrowed it down to a Ruger American or 10/22. Was about to go buy a 10/22 off the rack when I found an American .22 LR with some finish wear but complete and (allegedly) with a good bore on Gunbroker starting at $135.00. I guess everybody else was asleep because I actually won the darn thing. The finish wear doesn't hurt my feelings at all since this rifle is going to be my farm companion. Don't know if I'm going to scope it or use sights just yet.

So, what do I have here? Any known trouble spots with them? If it shoots as well as my Henry H001T I'll be quite happy.

I've never shot one but the word at my LGS is they shoot better than they should. There's several guys who frequent the place that have them and all are well pleased.
They like the adjustable trigger and say that the accuracy is better than it has a right to be.
If they made a bull barrel model with something other than a laminate stock, I'd own one now. I might still get a stainless/wood version with a standard barrel.

Sounds like you got a great deal.
Looking forward to your thoughts after you spend a little time with it.

Thanks bro. Like my Henry, the American .22 feels more like it's larger centerfire counterpart. Which, makes it a nice understudy for meaningful practice. Being a bolt action it should be pretty easy to clean. I have a bunch of Thunderbolt ammo that shoots pretty well for practice but is really dirty in an automatic or even a lever action.

Wow, that is really sharp! I think camo looks 1000x better than generic black plastic, more rifles should get them. I'm probably going to rattle can the stock on mine matte gray to match my Remington 700 6.5.

I stopped at my LGS today to check on the Ruger American. None of his distributors had them in stock.
While there I did find this. CZ 457 Varmint in .22lr. I ordered a scope base and Vortex 4-16 DB a bit ago.
Looking forward to getting it set up and trying it out.

Also got one of these. CZ 455 scout in .22lr. The 455 was replaced by the 457 and CZ closed them out at a discount.
Should be good for the grandkids.

@FergusonTO35, how's your new American?

Funny you should ask...

The fun store called and said the rifle was in, so I hustled on over and picked it up. My receiver sight hasn't come in yet, so I got the issue open sights sighted in. It likes the rear leaf all the way up, fortunately the windage was perfect. This is a typical group at 40 yards rested on shooting sticks. Nothing special, but as good as I can do with any other gun i have ever tried. Ammo is Winchester Power Point hyper velocity, which hits hard and shoots well for me out of non-autoloaders.

Very happy so far, looking forward to trying the receiver sight and more types of ammo!

The gun looks like it's in good shape I don't see any road rash at all.
Looks to shoot pretty decent as well. Considering what you paid, it's worthy of a,
You Suck.

Thanks bro. The stock does have some scuffs and there was a bit of surface rust on the bolt and receiver. A bit of WD-40 on a cloth took care of it. I don't think it has been fired that much, but it probably spent its life riding in a truck or 4 wheeler.

Stock is now painted and reassembled. I opted not to paint the removable butt and comb part, since that is going to get dirt and sweat on it. Gonna let it dry in the sun for a day before I put the action back on.

Thanks bro. A few of the scuffs and scratches can be discerned through the paint but I'm not worried about it. Hopefully I can reassemble and put some rounds through it today.

Got any pics of the assembled gun?
I'd really like to see how it turned out.

Here ya go. It turned out quite nice. Only shot it with Thunderduds so far so no groups to brag about.

That turned out really nice!
I've been using CCI std velocity with good results. It's relatively inexpensive and shoots well.
If you want to take a step up, SK standard plus is a good choice.
