I saw it in his 056 ad. Then he got mad at guys in his thread for giving up his secret. Idk. I've heard of guys using shrink tube for years

I have used it on 3 of my saws, I put on a triple layer, one sleeve over the other, each one a 1/2" longer than the last so that the very ends tapered down tight to the aluminum handle. Has worked great but is smooth so dry hands or gloves works best. I bought a roll of the Stihl handle hose after that and still am using it up, better grip to it but much more difficult to install. Use comp air and dish soap method, still break a sweat and a few curse words during install.

I don't know anyone putting it on saws ,but I know several people putting it on catfishing rods and its holding up great and the x pattern stuff doesn't seem to be as slippery when wet either, I've used many of these rods in the last year and I love it myself. Thinking of trying some on my older rod handles as well to cover up the old cork on them.

The X tube sounds like it is more of a thin decorative wrap.
The buy heatshrink is electrical grade , sunlight resistant with good adhesive.
It has a better shrink ratio which means it conforms to shape better and gets thicker as it shrinks.
The heatshrink handles abrasion better and does not pick up grit.
