Could be a hickory. That heart would match better with that. I wish we could see more leaves and the structure layout better and not just shade leaves on a sucker epercormic branch

I thought hickory also but the leaves are huge. That’s how the leaves are on the entire tree. South eastern Ohio my location.

Looks like magnolia we get in Britain but huge. and also the huge magnolias we saw in NYC when we were there last summer. [emoji106]

Looks a lot like Pig Nut Hickory to me, but if it is it will not stay soft for long. When splitting the wood fibers and bark will be tough to get apart.

Big Leaf Magnolia is usually further south, and real big leaves!
Yea knowing where he is now, I retract the magnolia suggestion and hickory makes way more sense to the region and the color matches.

As for the leaf size it could be a suppressed tree and the whole thing has what we call shade leaves which are larger and not quite the classic shape as it struggles to capture the most light it can.
