Excellent rifles. Owned 2 weatherby vanguards. A .257 weatherby and a 300 weatherby. Both were capable of sub 1" groups with factory ammo.

First thing one might consider is the magnification your looking for. Typical 3-9 power or a bit more magnification? If your taking longer shots say 300-400 yards and beyond and weight isn't an issue a variable with 14 or even 24 power might be a better choice.

I've own/owned quite a few bolt action rifle and scopes through the years. In the price range you mention a few standout. Leupold vx3, Leupold vxr and Vortex Viper. The 6.5-20x50 Vortex Viper I have is mounted on a heavy barreled Rem. 700 in 300 rum. Heavy gun, heavy scope. Paid $299 for the scope. It's brighter and clearer than any other scope I've used in that price range.
Vortex also has a no questions asked lifetime warranty. No receipt no BS. If it breaks and says Vortex send it back they fix it forever.

Avoid the older vortex 4-16 PST vipers.
I think the newer models are better.
Personally, I'd look at spending a bit more on glass if you can. I would look for a used Ziess conquest.
