Good stuff! It's nice to see guys still at it, adding new info. These results back up Timberwolves findings from, I don't know 07 or so. At that time "if I remember correctly" he saw gains with mufflers open up to 120% the exhaust port area. However the gains from 80% up or so weren't much, but noise sure increased. So for the most part if you want power, go big! lol. Not sure how this effects strato engines, I would expect there to be a difference with Strato engines.[emoji111]

For those who weren't around at the time Timberwolf was the real deal, he totally engineered things from a scientific and experimental standpoint, he even had a working dyno he made. The good old days.[emoji17]

Great test Julian, as usual. Thank you for sharing.

I’m not sure why people think smaller outlets will help power in a mufflered saw. I get it on a pipe.

It’s all about sacrificing noise for power.

It would be cool as hell to have seen what a decibel meter woulda said for each one. I bought one for testing (they are cheap-actually bought to see what decibel my in-laws reach at gatherings) and as usual, haven’t had the time to play.

I saved all that info with pics in a thread. Before it was lost. Thanks for the reminder.

Impressive results, but I would caution against applying them to all saws.

TM is expert at porting saws, and his saws need all the flow they can get.

I have a few saws that lost torque when I opened up the mufflers too much. Since I like to lean on a saw, I changed them back.

I believe that each saws has a sweet spot that will depend more on it's porting more than on any formula. (will depend on cylinder porting and ignition timing)

Also, I believe TM runs screens on all his ports??? (that would reduce flow about 50% compared to the unscreened ports some builders use?)

I put on my Motorcycle Helmet and lowered the face shield to prepare for the backlash!

Jeff, I can feel the difference in torque, which I'm sure would translate to cut times.

I'm sure the best running saws will have very open mufflers, as mine do, but it does not work on every saw.

If you want, I'll bring some mufflers for testing at the CT GTG, and I'll let your or Mason or Dan run them so no one cries foul.
