Howdy!

I finally decided to take one of these newfangled saws for myself. A lot of 462's and 572's have passed through here, but none stayed. The MS500i will stay for a little while at least. Finding a favorable spot in the saw lineup around here will be no short order, especially in the 75-90cc range. It'll see some stiff competition in that range.

So, here goes the thread. Going to run it with the 28" Tsumura with Stihl RS chain initially. Also going to run it with the ES Light 20 and 25" if I can talk a 25 out of my dealer. Otherwise, I'll run it with my 24" Tsumura.

Hoping to offer up some findings and insight on the saw for those that have questions or curiosities.

It will be receiving some mods straight away after break in.

Some more pics and general stuff I noticed about the saw.

Standard saws have the small clutch cover just like the 462. Not sure if the R model clutch cover is available yet.

1128 clutch drum.

I knew something felt very familiar as I popped the clip on the clutch drum. 1128 clutch...

Yep....very familiar indeed.

Ooops! I got off on the wrong foot...filter pics. We need filter pics for Jeffy! :) @RI Chevy

White HD2 setup with washable filter.

Same style inner flange that many new Stihl filters have.

Air filter cover has a 1/4 turn twist lock versus a screw on type.

Initial test setup. With the 28" Tsumura it's a little nose heavy and tippie IMO. The perfect balance point for this saw must be around a 24-25" blade.

Not surprising as this saw is light enough to hold with an extended arm at shoulder height with little effort.

And, the little spring return primer bulb and Stop button. No Off, Choke, or High Idle switch for this saw.

Too bad you don't also have a 462 … I'd really like to know how the 2 compare. Specifically, is there enough increase in torque to make it worth while to have both (I already have a 462 and I'm very impressed with the power/weight).

I have a 20" light bar on the 462, but 28" light bars on 2 440/460 Hybrids, and on my 460.

I've ran the 462 enough to offer some decent feedback, Mike. I just never bought one for myself. The 462 is a strong competitor...that I can say at this point.

Both saws are similar in feel. Very little difference in reach to the handle and overall saw ergonomics.

Let us know the torque difference you feel, of course after you get it broken in. I hate waiting for a saw to break in but you either get one that flat runs out of the box or a turd that turns into an animal after 10 tanks or something. I have no idea why that is but yeah lol. I’m subscribed to the thread!

I just made about 8-10 cuts with this saw. It's no slouch that's for sure. I'm going to put it some big wood tomorrow and get video.

One thing I'm noticing right off the bat is heat retention. Top cover is nearly as hot as the cylinder temps after running it for a few minutes.

It's going to be 81f tomorrow so we'll see how this thing does after a couple of tanks are through it.

Tomorrow's competition...a 2007 PS-630 Dolmar with a 7910 piston and cylinder.

I figured an old modded 79cc against a new 79cc would be a decent measuring stick for this saw.

The MS500 is very similar in size with the 64/73/79XX Dolmars.
