I agree that 3/8" chisel will come to a sudden stop when it hits any kind of dirt.
I buck skidded firewood turkey oak logs (very thick and deep bark) and my chains get dull all the time.

But when sharp I prefer 3/8" over the one single .404" setup I have, which is round tooth.
My .404" will just keep on cutting even when visibly dull, but the round tooth is too slow for my liking.

My .404" setup also seems to demand much more power from the saw than 3/8" does.

Round tooth is all I got in .404" and I know it doesn't compare to chisel tooth - no need to tell me that.

I got the .404" just to give it a try, I guess I should look into getting a loop of chisel tooth to get a proper idea of .404".

My .404" B&C setup is 20", as are my main 3/8" B&C setups.
I run .404" on my (stock) Dolmar PS-7900.

The chainspeed is higher on 8 pin .404 than 3/8 8 pin (7 pin .404 is the almost the same size as 3/8 8 pin). So the .404 was actually getting more wear from the increased chainspeed over 3/8 8 pin.

Only if the saw is spinning the chain faster in the wood.
My guess is rpm was higher with the 3/8-8

Im a big fan of 404, yes it takes more power to pull it. An the first cuts are slower than 3/8 on a 70cc saw.
But you can cut almost forever with it.
I recently used a half chisel 404 chain for 8 tanks and I it still cuts like it was new. On tank 9 I hit a big piece of metal

.404 used to be made in 050, but I don't think anyone has made it for years maybe decades. A few ol timers have some if you really wanted to find it but its fairly rare. I run 063 .404 and 063 3/8 so I can swap nose sprockets around between bars if I need too. Speed isn't everything, I like .404 on my 80 & 90cc saws, in Ozzy hardwoods it cuts for ages with chipper or semi chisel chain. Also get a lot of production/sharpenings out of the big long cutters.

Yessir. I have everything in .050. I was hoping to just be able to take one of my bars and grab a new tip. Looks like I'd have to buy a whole new bar. TY

3/8 Oregon generally has taller teeth than Stihl. Is this the same for 404?
